Hello!! I know some people might be sick of seeing subject selection forums, sorry! I am in year 10 and have just picked my subjects. They aren't locked in yet but they will be on monday so thanks to anyone who is able to reply before then! I have picked these subjects: english advanced/extension 1, maths advanced, legal studies, economics and spanish beginners. Just wondering if anyone who has taken these subjects has enjoyed them or has anything to share about the workload, content, assessments etc as it would be much appreciated. I'm also considering swapping economics or legal studies for drama as some teachers told me it's good to have a fun subject.

I'm also a bit worried about math advanced. I've always been in 5.1 but I've taken the 5.2 tests and recently moved up to a 5.2 class, I didn't do amazing on the last tests but it was a little bit above average since I was teaching myself from home. Is it easy to drop down to maths standard later? I would feel a bit stupid because I worked so hard to get into maths advanced (it's a requirement to do chemistry at my school) but math standard might just be less stressful. Do you need a lot of formulas etc from math advanced to be used in chemistry, or can I drop to maths standard later? Thanks.

I think it will probably be quite difficult to do adv math if u did 5.2 but if u are willing to lock in and put a lot of time into math it’s doable. But u can always drop to std so maybe try adv first. I mean I don’t do chem but I’m pretty sure the formulas in adv math aren’t directly applicable to chem cause there different. But I might be wrong. But I think the main reason why math adv is a requirement for chem is because there are a lot of calculations so it math skills should prob be up to par to an adv level

As someone who did 5.2 math and is doing math advanced. it is a struggle, but definitely prelearn a few concepts. also, PRACTICE, THAT WAS MY BIGGEST MISTAKE. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PRACTICE.

im so confused about 5.2 math cause my school says its fine for anyone in 5.2 or 5.3 to do math adv as long as you get a certain average 😭 i wish i could just do standard maths so i didnt have to worry about it so much but my school requires it for chem

I think you should keep advanced for now, and if it gets stressful drop it later, because you can always go down to standard but you can't go up from standard to advanced

as long as you have a class of 5+ people and it's not via distance ed then i think you should, unless you need eco or legal for your future. i also agree with apricot in giving advanced a shot. you might regret not at least taking it for a couple weeks idk

Please correct me if I'm wrong : but besides basic algebraic calculations and basic understanding of graphing data I couldn't find much maths (let alone any "formula") used in HSC chemistry. Most of those you would have learned even before Yr10 maths.

The only thing I could think of that's remotely "maths-related" is probably understanding what logarithmic function is.

yes, starting to understand now it's more about a basic knowledge of 5.2/3 concepts from year 10 including logarithms needed, not just advanced maths. my school is just a bit weird about it ig
