and yes i agree wif u on da part about everyone havin similar intelligence levels... itz just a matter of u opening urself and exposing urself to mind bogging challenges... datz where u get da notion of a smat person and a complete idiot... ur willingness to challenge urself!

Yeah, sorry.. School-wise, you don't really need others to compare yourself against others. The textbook and doing questions does that for you.

My point was that don't compete with others, just use them as a tool to measure progress. If someone used to consistently beat you by 20% in exams and the gap closes to 10%, then 5%, etc., that's progress and we should be happy with that instead of feeling down on ourselves because they still constantly beat us.
hey... i like that!

but Cyph, aren't you saying: "let's not see the bucket as half empty and be sad about it, let's see it as half full and be grateful of what we have?"

I enjoyed my HSC. With the exception of English, I liked all my subjects and found them interesting most of the time.

Some of my friends could probably be classified as "I like chemistry" or "Maths is fun, especially 4 unit". And funnily enough, comparing my results to them wasn't demoralising. I knew that they were among the top students in the state and by comparing my marks to them, I was gauging how close I was to the top.

One guy in my grade once got his report, looked at his rank in Enlgish and said "Awww, 94th. What am I going to tell my mum?" to which a friend of mine answered "Just say - look mum, I came 94th in the state!"

Now before I get hit by a barrage of angry second rate high school students (perhaps I shouldn't call them that  ), remember that taking things light heartedly helps you cope with these sorts of situations.

Cyph, i sorta get how you'd think that way with the band-6 girl next to you. but really competing and comparing are also two sides of the same coin.

Only that competing is you're sad when you lose, and in comparing you may be happy when you lose (when you lose less than you did before).

My best friend sat next to me in maths for like about 5-6 years, and I tell you, if he was thinking like you, he'd be last in the grade. but he didn't; the thing is you don't need to try to be first in the state or nethin, but there's always gonna be somebody around who's your level. and you compete with those ppl.

if you can't find neone in your level, you're either first in the grade or last in the grade...

yeah, but why do you want to compete with them? I don't think competition is healthy - competition is essentially your ego coming though
in terms of HSC and schooling I think competition is a good thing if you can take it. If you come last in the grade in a good selective school, you might not want to try , but if say you come 50th, the competition may motivate you to increase your rank to say top 30. What Im saying is that competition is a good thing if you can hack it, and that requires a small ego, not a big one.

I think people that cope with competition the best are modest and dont have a big ego, because they dont feel as down when they get a bad result.

umm i think competition as a driving force for learning is the best argument for NSW's selective school system. You group all the ppl with equal talents together. That way, average ppl dun get freaked out by the geniuses, and the smart ppl don't get complacent.

but competition is bad when you expect to win and you don't. it ultimately depends on who you compare yourself against...

yep u got it...it's no fun bein beaten by some1 u know you'll never beat. and then again, if you look at it from another way, it's also no fun beating ppl who u know u're way ahead of...

that's wot 'match-making's for in warcraft 3, etc..

haha...it's been a while since i was in that position...

but i noticed that, at least in my school, ppl don't try to compare themselves with the top ppl. if they do, i haven't noticed it. idunno why. perhaps it's because it's usually more the top person's fault if the mark difference is closer (i.e the top person screwed one of his assessments or somethin).

maybe it works differently in other schools, idunno...

competition is necessary for improvement in my opinion. the crap teachers tell us about just comparing with ourselves is a load of rubbish.

OMG, how on Earth did this story get out??!! :chainsaw:

I'm starting to hesitate/panic here. I figure there are enough Ruse people on this forum to know what happened so it's probably best you hear it from me rather than one of them.

Yes, I did blow up/inflate a rubber glove on my head. I saw some street theatre guy doing it a Cogee once and thought, "hmmm, looks like an easy way to get some laughs by making embarrasing myself in front of the entire school - I'll do it!"

So come the year 12 prefect assembly (at the end of term 3), which was to be a talent quest, I auditioned with this "trick". The prefects said they liked it, but since it was a singing/dancing talent quest, that I would be required to dance while doing it. I said sure, and they video taped it and showed it to assembly in a "preview" of what's to come.

The Hampster Dance song was in no way my choice, it was made by someone else. I won the audience favorite award - which was a free ticket to that terms school dance.

I was a rare breed in James Ruse. Not many Ruse students would do something like that, nor did I get above 99.50 - so I'm not your average Ruse student.

The thing I like about uni is that everyone either doesn't know about this incident or they have forgotten (or the novelty value has worn off).

competition is good if you can cope with it. A lot of ppl can't. I just think you should just do your best, that's all that's in your control. Everything else is just basically luck or fate or whichever combination you choose to believe in. Not everyone can be number 1 in everything and IMHO to think that way, you're just setting yourself up for dissapointment.

i'm sure there'll always be ppl like bambul in selective schools like ruse or whatever. In terms of sheer probability its impossible to keep a school entirely homogenous.

OT: I agree, muldersgun, that Colin Firth is indeed mightier than the sword.
