Kinda ridiculous how he's getting the exorbitant payrise though, he hasn't really done anything good for QANTAS and he's getting paid enough anyway.
he was made CEO of QANTAS in 2008 with a plan to reshape the qantas business model. that has, for the most part, failed. the share price has taken a dive since 2008. so why is he acting this way? some think he's acting so brazenly because he knows his term as CEO has an expiry date (and he has a golden parachute) so he gives no fucks. on the other hand, QANTAS is Australia's flag carrier airline. this means it enjoys preferential rights and treatment, but also that the government who bestows this status also has extraordinary powers. the Government is making an urgent application to Fair Work Australia under Section 424 of the Fair Work Act to terminate all industrial action at Qantas, "The provisions are there for mandatory conciliation. This will be aimed at both actions by unions and by Qantas management." in essence, Alan Joyce knows that the government will intervene, potentially in the QANTAS management's favour.

Alan Joyce calls his uniquely Irish approach to running an airline "the withdrawal method".

The whole Qantas Board should be dismissed for allowing this to happen.

I don't get why lots of people says Qantas can't fold either. It was only a few years back that Ansett folded.

Qantas' problem is largely of their own doing (and Alan Joyces). In the past 2 years where they expedited the amount of aircraft maintenance performed offshore and there have now been a tonne of inflight incidents (including the near catastrophic A380 flight out of Changai Airport). Passengers have lost confidence in the safety of Qantas. When I heard yesterday that Qantas & Alan Joyce had called an urgent press conference in 30 minutes time at Sydney Airport (5pm) and that the news was reportedly 'huge', I at first thought Qantas had lost a plane or there had been an accident.

If I had to Choose between Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand, Virgin or any of the other major airlines, I'd choose them all over Qantas, as their public image is better and they are probably cheaper than Qantas. Even if the Qantas flight was the same price, I'd choose to fly another airline (unless work booked it and I didn't have a choice).

except both singapore airlines and air new zealand have both had fatal jet airliner crashes, while qantas has a perfect record (it has only crashed prop planes).

and one often does not have a choice between qantas and virgin. and choosing qantas over virgin is fucking retarded.

I know that Qantas has never had a fatal accident, although with the amount of serious accidents that have occurred recently it is only going to be a matter of time. I'm not sure when ANZ and SA last had serious incidents, although I don't think they have in recent times and I feel safe flying them.

Pay your workers more? Disgusting socialism.

Shut your company down so you lose over 20 million dollars a day in revenue? Brilliant! (The government will make sure we don't go broke anyway, but that's not socialist that's freedom)

The public getting mad? Quick, call the IPA to fill up the papers with explanations of why we're the good guys.

Lol, Jetstar sent out an email this morning to all staff saying they were not affected by the strike and that it was only effective for Qantas as of 26 October 2011. So much for Qantas only deciding to ground the airline yesterday...

Why should the tax payer subsidise a few thousand redundant airline employees. If qantas does not need these people anymore, i say, Fire them and send their jobs overseas. At the end of the day, the consumer wins.

Besides, qantas has plenty of competitors that could step up. Jetstar being one of them.
