Annotate your poems - it always helps. I always like to write up one page summaries on each poem, that summarises techniques, effect, quotes etc. - makes preparating for exams a whole lot easier. Also, writing practise essays are great, albeit, they can be a tad time consuming. But then again, that's what works for me, and thta doesn't work on everyone, so yeah.

SPECS and SLIMS

Subject - what it's about.
Purpose - what the poem intended to do e.g. inform, persuade, describe.
Emotions - what moods, feelings does the poem evoke for the responder.
Craftsmanship (techniques) - Sound e.g. alliteration, onomatopoeia.
- Language e.g. hyperbole, irony, cliche.
- Imagery e.g. simile, metaphor, personification.
- Movement e.g. rhythm, rhyme.
- Structure e.g. stanzas, rhyme pattern (I think).
Summary - bring everything above together using simplified, generalised terms.
