Damn. I ran out of time for 2001, the polynomial question stuffed me up. I still ended up with 110 but had only about 5 minutes to complete the last part of Q8 and had to write with a pencil the whole time :(

but if you take it slow won't you run out of time? i heard that you hav to work really fast in extension 2 maths exams?
It's a balancing process. Time is of the essence though my rule of thumb goes like this:

q1 - shouldn't take more than 5 mins, if you even have to think, you're in trouble
q2 - 5 mins max
q3 - if it's graphs, then 15 max. Otherwise 10
q4 - if it's conics, 20-25 mins. If not, then 15-20
q5 - about 25
q6 - about 25
q7 - 30 mins
q8 - 40 mins

My aim is to do Q1-4 in an hour, Q5-6 in an hour, Q7-8 in an hour. But i usually can do Q1-4 in 1 hr and 15 mins. I'm trying to pick up my pace for Q7-8.

This is interesting, say for example you're on Q.4 and this single 4 mark Q is bothering you, you're not really nailing it. Do you move on after 20minutes has exceeded or do you take it out then move on?

Wow, some people have some pretty insane timing! 5mins for inegration and complex no's? I write far too slow for that. This is how I go about it:

Q:1. 10 mins (sometimes a little under for the easy papers)
Q:2. 15 mins
Q:3. 15-20 mins (graphing can take a while)
Q:4. 15 -20 mins (conics chews a bit of time)
Q:5. 25 mins
Q:6. 20-25 mins (depending on whether the mechanics is resisted or circular motion)
Leave an hour for Q:7 & 8. Some of the harder 3u gets lengthy, but can usually fly through induction and inequalities questions in a couple of minutes.

Is that more like what everyone else does?

this is much better, although i would like have 50 mintues for question 8.

5 minutes for integration, is just wayy to little, i need about 10.

If I can't answer a question within 1-2 minutes of first reading it, then I'll move on and answer the rest of the question. I take down the time I spent on that question and see how much time I should budget on trying to figure it out.

Say I started answering q4. I get stuck on a 4 marker. I'd move on and answer the rest of the question as quickly and accurately as I can. If I have completed the question in 17 mins, I'd leave 3-5 mins to figure it out at the end.

However, if I've exceeded the ~20 mins, I leave the question out. And any time I get left to try it is a bonus. Also, if it's a very hard paper, I'll do everything slowly, and give myself an extra 3 mins for q4-8, and don't bother checking.

PS I'm constantly checking the clock in my exam, literally

EDIT:
5 minutes for integration, is just wayy to little, i need about 10.
If it's partial fractions, there is a quick of getting a,b,c without using simultaneous eqns

Argh, yeah, integration would be like 2 mins without partial fractions (and t method). :p
