What is AQIS, what is it's responsibility and how are these enforced?
The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Services operates within the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and works with the Australian Customs Service, Aus Post and air courier firms as well as similar organisations in countries such as the US, India, Switzerland and the UK. It is responsible for:
-protecting Aus primary producers and community from exotic pests and disease
-inspecting legally imported animals, plants and their products as well international travellers
-helping the international movement of people by checking the quarantine status of overseas travellers passing through airport and seaports
-providing export certification for agricultural produce and other commodities so Aus food and other ag products can enter and compete in global markets
-negotiating national and international agreements and protocols on behalf of the industries that require it.

to protect Aus from exotic pests and disease the AQIS runs:
- an airports program, with inspectors, dogs, luggage x-rays and on-the-spot fines
-an international mail program with detector dogs, officers and x-ray units
-a sea ports program
-a ballast water program
-a post-entry plant quarantine station at Easter Creek in NSW
-quarantine stations for imported animals

the aim of the program is to educate the australian public on food safety, they do this by running large programs/seminars/forums to raise money for safe food practices. The groups 5 main messages are
-keep hot food hot
-keep cold foods refridgerated
-hand washing
-maintaining clean kitchens and utensils
-cooking food to ensure it is safe for consumption

Decribe the effect the AFI has on the economy, stating specific examples.

-it is Aus's largest manufacturing sector
-contributes 25% of all exports
-exports a large quantity of raw materials and processed foods
-employes 8-9% of all working people
-largest employer in Aus
-food service and catering has expanded as a result of Aus's booming tourism industry

not quite sure if that is right

ummmmm what are 4 ways technology influences our general nutritio

-the intoduction of gm foods has allowed for the indtrodution of multiple vitamins to new products eg, super tomato contains over 12 additional vitmins and minerals.
-has allowed for a greater analysis of individual nutritional needs more accurately
-has caused negative effects in regards to shopping online = more convenience foods pruchased online eg dominos online
- allowed for the introduction of new products eg, eg customised food products to be made online.

what are the seven steps of HACCP?

bacteria, protozoans is that what you mean or do you mean the factors in which case

1, Warmth
2, Moisture
3, O2
4, Food Source

or do you mean such as dented cans, open containers etc.?

Predict and explain a range of impacts on society if food policy and legislation were not enforced. 6 marks [2005 HSC]

answers i was reffering to were
-physical changes
-chemical reactions
-activity of enzymes
-attack by rodents or insects
-activity of microbes

hmm thats a hard one
-environmental issues (clean air and waters act)
-pricing issues, (trade practices act)
-labelling requirements and their implications on health (australian food standards code)
- OHS issues and the impact on employees (OH&S)
-foods could be rotten, not fit for human consumption, damaged or of poor quality, uses too much of an ingredient, has been watered down, not packaged properly (food act)
-noise would be an issue for areas surrounding factories (noise pollution act)
-food could leave Aus in bad condition (export control orders)

Define: sous vide, active packaging and modified atmosphere packaging

Sous Vide= when a perishably food is cooked in a vaccuum bag which has has all air is removed providing an anoxic environment these bags are made of a thermosetting-plastic such as polypropylene or polyethylene, and are heat stable. The food product is then blast chilled to retain cell structure and to keep in nutrients and other vitamins and minerals. Food products which are packaged in this way have an extended shelf life of up to 6 weeks

Active Packaging = refers to the use of a material that will provide a barrier that will interact with the ambient surroundings to maintiain a stable environment for the food product that will ensure the longevity of its life.

M.A.P. = works from the principal that the starting atmosphere is mixed with other gases to to ensure an extended shelf life of a product. There are two methods for this process; headspace-gasing map and film-additive map.

Identify 3 legislations relating to packaging and labelling in the food industry.

Storage takes place when raw produce is stored before being manufactured into value-added foods. Manufacture takes place after the raw produce has being thawed or removed from storage. Often food manufacturing plants are located near sources of raw materials or transport networks.

Next question: Identify ONE native Australian plant, state where it is found, describe its flavour and identify ONE usage of the plant, identify at least one retail product that can produced using this plant and state the cost of this retail product/s.

The question tests the following outcome:
H1.2: A student examines the nature and extent of the Australian food industry.

he is and he isn't i think, this would realte to the AFI, we were given a question like this in class to do, and our teacher and the other teacher said that this type of question should not be asked as for it is not specified in syllabus.

Michael, I got this question from here:

HSC Online

As for my previous question, I assumed that it was in the syllabus as it was taken from a Board of Studies Online Multiple Choice Quiz!

ok got ya, well that last question that you put up "dentify ONE native Australian plant, state where it is found, describe its flavour and identify ONE usage of the plant, identify at least one retail product that can produced using this plant and state the cost of this retail product/s." cannot be asked for us as for it does not relate to our syllabus, this was in the old food technology 2u subject, this qustion can still be done easily if we go

identify one austrailan organisation and identify how it maintains quality control.

Sanitarium, maintains quality control by the use of metal detectors, weights, sieves, screens, ISO9000, HACCP and OH&S.

How does modified atmosphere packaging preserve food? it is in the syllabus sorry schoey i just didnt see it: MAF occurs when either the starting atmosphere surrounding food is controlled and the packaging is inert of the packaging material itself controls the movement of gases from inside and outside of the package.

Next q: The 4 important driving forces behind developments in any particular sector of the food industry are?
