Which Uni is best for Commerce?

Got kinda confused with the UTS, USYD & UNSW all trying to jazz up their commerce degrees, so i need an honest opinion (hopefully someone that is studying the course) on which uni offers the most to students in terms of career opportunities and course outline

thnx =)

UNSW?

They're very strong in that area plus theres high demand judging from the 02' cutoffs.

probably
but high-cutoffs doesnt necessarily mean its the best for that particular degree, its usually just student demand

I believe Macquarie uni is highly reputable for its Commerce/Economics faculty (the best for Actuary)

UNSW and USyd are about the same, but im not sure about this, I'm trying to find out myself

I suggest u go to ur local library or the state library and read the Good Universities Guide 2003, which basically rates each uni for different courses. U might get a clearer picture

Well I had a brief read today, and for Business and Management, UNSW had it better overall, in terms of educational experience, teaching quality, percentage of graduates still seeking work and starting salaries compared. Next best was Macquarie and then Sydney (out of those 3, i didnt look at any other Uni's). For Accounting it was much the same. I'll go back today if it isnt closed and post the actual data.

ug the good university guide rankings are so depressing.... :(

i'd list examples but i leant the book to someone

nsw allows you to be more specific with your majors while sydney is a more generalised course. in sydney everyone has to do certian subjects (econometrics etc...)

therefore, nsw is better for those who already know what they want to do, while sydney is better for those who don't know what they want to do, but know that they want to work in that general subject area.

in terms if academic thingys, i think they're about the same.

I've heard that USyd is making massive efforts to upgrade their commerce courses, particularly in finance and accounting.

That could however just be part of my attempt to justify my desire to go to usyd for comm/law despite being given a multitude of reasons to go to unsw. *sigh*

I did however call an acquaintace who does merchant banking at macquarie after graduating 2yrs ago from usyd (my desired occupation, course and uni). She said the workforce used to be dominated by unsw graduates, but at macquarie atm, its 50:50 unsw:usyd. Also her sister, who is also doing commerce at usyd is doing heaps of new practical financial modelling courses etc, which weren't there when she was....they are definitely trying to improve.

can u do accounting with a B Economics? Cos i want to do accounting, but i only got 93 which leaves me with
- B Business at UTS
- B Economics at UNSW
or B Commerce at Sydney (but i'm not sure if i could get into this course because last yr's cut-of was 93, and my UAI is 93!! Someone answer this too!)
I don't know which uni is better!

I reckon majoring in actuarial studies at UNSW under commerce is just as good as macquarie. Plus they have an advanced science program which is also good (lots of major choices).

Ahhh, so thats why I got a message from Sazzy! :)

About Advanced Science: I don't think you can do it with Actuarial Studies, not officially anyway. My friend is doing Commerce(Actuarial Studies)/Science(Mathematics) and has been told that he can only do vanilla science, not advanced.

So he is overloading like crazy (he has done the equivalent of 1.3125 years worth in his first year) to try to finish his double degree 1 year early and then do all the subjects that he would have done in advanced science, then say "look, I've done everything I need to get an advanced science degree, just give me the qualification!"

If you want, you can message me and I'll pass on his email onto you so you can ask him some questions yourself if you want.
