The only thing wrong with those Lancers is the CVT transmission. I've never really been a fan. Seems a little tacky to me - simulating gear changes.

The Lancer is a great first car, pretty safe, has plenty of modding potential if you wish, with a CVT transmission which isn't that bad (I've driven the 08 Lancer before). That being said, that's pricey because it's
a) an old VR-X (i.e. before they upgraded the engine to 2.4L)
b) 2008

A new base model ES can be had for under $21k driveaway, and a lot of the features which used to be unique to the VR-X are often thrown into the base model ES when they do sales or specials or some kind of "pack".

But then if you're also throwing new cars into the choice, it depends whether you want something which you can modify/have fun with, or if you just want a good car for getting from A-B. There are some great value deals in much newer cars seeing that the Lancer is quite a few years old in design. The Lancer doesn't have very good NVH compared to it's peers (e.g. Civic, Mazda3, etc), and the interior can feel a bit cheap. A brand new Cruze can be had for your bduget as well and if you're not into modding/drive that much and just want a cheap reliable car, that could also be an option.

The CVT isn't too horrible, its just the price - a new one is 21k driveaway which makes that one which is only a VR seem a little ridiculous. My mate's got one and he isn't impressed with the paint quality, seems to chip really easily.

but of course. People are downsizing, petrol is expensive etc.

I would always go mazda 2 hatch if i was buying a new small car.
That or a holden barina 2d hatch.
