It's been five long, interesting, industry-changing years since the world's most pervasive PC operating system underwent its last revision, but the time is at long last upon us. Vista (and Office 2007) will be launched officially on November 30th to corporate customers, and for consumers it will be available on January 30th, 2007

I rather wait for a while after Vista is released, I mean cmon the thing needs to go through alot of checkups and security etc to match its standards, there would be major changes and bugs (if there's any which i am sure will be) to be checked on etc. So yeah.

My main interest in Vista comes in the form of the supposed improvements to gaming performance. Since DX10 is Vista-exclusive, that's also something I'll have to think about. But either way I'll probably wait 6 months or so before taking the plunge.. that's hopefully enough time for them to sort out the major inevitable bugs. As for productivity.. XP is enough for me at the moment.

I'm not too interested in Vista and Office 07... I'm at the point where I no longer want to have to learn anything because I simply don't have time. Microsoft's idea of changing all the menu layouts in Office 07 mean it'll take me a long time to get used to, when really, I'm happy with the way Office 03 works for me. As for Windows XP, I'm also used to it, and am quite happy that my work laptop is very secure and I can trust it for my internet banking and whatnot. So really, there's no benefit of upgrading to Win Vista- and it'll probably slow down my modestly specced laptop too. As for bitlock- we use Safeguard Easy anyway so it's not like it's a "new" feature.

msft jeez they spend millions on R&D and get nothing (as steve jobs said wwdc 06).. Upgrading to Windows Vista will prolly take an arm and a leg. Its not worth it, I think new Office is better than vista (sorry to all the windows lovers, i don't want a flame war or anything)

Apple has a program called Boot Camp assistant (that's currently in beta and is free to download off Apple's website) that allows you to install Windows XP on a Mac. Then you can dual-boot OS X and XP, so when you want to run PC programs or games, you fire up XP. Alternatively, a company called Parallels offers a virtualisation solution (which isn't free), which runs XP within OS X so you can work with both at the same time. Both solutions require a copy of XP.

As for "better", it's pretty subjective. Look at it this way: nearly everything you can do on a PC, you can do on a Mac. Most Windows apps have equivalents (often free ones) on the Mac that can be found with a quick Google search. Depending on your point of view, you might like the design and looks of a Mac and the Mac OS X operating system, or you might not. If you're into digital media (photos, movies, DVDs, podcasting, etc) then Macs are inarguably better since they ship with the iLife package (which currently has no equivalent on Windows till Vista comes out). Mac security (for the time being) is much better than Windows (due to a variety of factors). And Apple's recent switch to Intel hardware means that all the current Macs are pretty much on a par with PCs in terms of power and price. But Macs definitely don't have the same game support as Windows does. Like I said above, if you use Boot Camp or Parallels you'll be able to run XP to play games, but it's not a very clean solution.

The best way for you to decide is to drop into a store that carries Macs and actually try it out for yourself. Use some of the programs. Fiddle around with things. See if you like it. It'll be better than listening to others crap on about it.

No Windows viruses will affect Macs due to the different architectures (unless you happen to be running Windows on your Mac, in which case the virus will affect Windows but not OS X). This is partly due to the small market share of Macs (it's much more profitable and fun to hack Windows), and partly due to the Unix foundation of OS X (which is inherently more secure than XP, though Vista may rectify this). In short, the however many bazillion dodgy Windows viruses don't affect Macs. Of course, this may change in the future as Macs get more popular, but they're pretty secure machines to work with and objectively, it's hard not to say that the underlying security is better than Windows XP.

I'm looking forward to Vista, I believe it looks very nice. A big improvement over XP, Microsoft's driver support for Windows is amazing.

I have a couple of things to say about Windows bashing:

1. Viruses - I've run Windows since 95, I have yet to get a single virus, why? Because I have common sense. People who blame an OS because of viruses are stupid. Don't open e-mail from people you don't know, don't visit crack/serial/porn websites that look dodgy and know that when you download illegal files through bittorrent, limewire etc that the files contained in those torrents can be anything.

2. It's a rip off of Mac/Linux - Who cares if it's a rip off? I fail to see how this is a bad thing. Wouldn't it be better if there are similar features in all operating systems, making it easier to use all 3 due to there being familiar features?

You might be thinking "Pfft MS fanboy", but please know that I'm not a fanboy, my next, and first laptop is going to be a MacBook, I just find it stupidly annoying when people bash Windows.
