Just curious about how hard I'm going to be working next year..What are the minimum ranks will I need for a 99+ ATAR? I'm happy with 98+ but would be elated with 99+!

School rank: top 5

Eng Adv: ~/160
Eng Ext: ~/160 (some people are dropping, so this number might go to about 120-140)
Math Adv: ~/156
Math Ext: ~/142
Math Ext 2 (if picked up): ~/72 (max. 72 anyway)
Physics: ~/67
Art: ~/13
Food Technology: ~/8

Thanks! :D

You usually need a few firsts for 99+ to ensure that you get the highest HSC scored by any student in your cohort converted to your internal mark. Otherwise make sure you receive an internal mark close to the mark of the top ranking student.

Since you're in a top 5 school, you should be aiming for the marks. Most people in your cohort will do well, and even state rank. You need to be up with them, so as long as you are, your rank doesn't really matter.

Considering your school has probably been up there in ranks, look at your school's statistics and see how your previous cohorts have performed. I would say the top 50% will probably get a 98+ ATAR.

Your school is ranked really well so I wouldn't focus too much on your own individual rank, focus more on the marks. I'd say that if you're in the top 20% you're guaranteed 99+ atar.

have a feeling you come from my school...so you need to be around top 20% of subjects and like 1st-2nd in classes with smaller cohorts and not as good results e.g. art/food tech

Following is the PERCENTILE (in the whole State) that was required in each subject in 2011 to score 45.6/50 scaled mark per unit (456/500 aggregate was the cutoff for 99 ATAR):

Eng Adv - 94
Eng X1 - 92
Maths - 95
Maths X1 - 76
Maths X2 - 54
Physics - 94
VA - 98
FT - 99

Note that as they are Percentiles, the higher the number, the harder it was to get the magic 45.6.
So, you needed to be in the top 1% of the state (or possibly higher - the numbers are rounded) to get 45.6 in FT, but only in the top 46% in the state to get 45.6 in X2 Maths.

The corresponding percentiles for a mark of scaled mark of 43.2/50 per unit (the cutoff aggregate in 2011 for an ATAR of 98 being 432/500) were:

Eng Adv - 91
Eng X1 - 87
Maths - 92
Maths X1 - 66
Maths X2 - 40
Physics - 92
VA - 96
FT - 99 (yes, still 99th percentile, so obviously the 99th percentile in the previous list was high 99th)

(BTW, A3B2(SiO4)3, right?)

Could you probably give an estimation of these marks? Also, how do you look for the school's statistics (assuming they're online)?

Thanks for that!! So I should be aiming for high 90's for most of my subjects (probably not Maths X1 or X2 hahaha) in order to reach the percentile?

BTW, A3B2(SiO4)3, right? - sorry please explain?? it looks like chemistry to me haha
