Oh, I loathed that film.

But in terms of intended purpose, it is very much a product of the realist sub-genre; a series of plot events based upon everyday life and a strong sense of plausibility. If you recall, there is a perceptive conversation in the film between LB and Stella where the latter says something along the lines of "We've become a whole generation of peeping toms." Hence, Rear Window, in addition to the realist theme, is remarking upon the small but consistent moral degradations within society over time. According to Hitchcock, we've become so accustomed to satisfying our own curiosity that we are willing to forgo moral boundaries and invade the privacy of others.

Something like that anyway.
