How essential is opening a speech with "good morning class---hi year 12" / acknowledging the audience in the introduction?

I feel like it is rather tacky and diminishes the impact of my speech (as opposed to opening with a Tolstoy quote for example).

Not at all important if you've got a suitable alternative.

Don't do a class welcome intro, its a waste of speech time, just get started.

Yeah, that type of opening is more suited to formal speeches that you would, say, do in earlier school years. You should aim for something more inspiring or persuasive (ie, a strong thesis).

I wouldnt worry about it, the whole intro thing is mainly for people in Primary and Junior HS. If you have a quote, start with that I reckon.

Cheers guys, I've ended up going with this:

"Loneliness is and always has been the central and inevitable experience of every man."
