The top mark in the HSC exam is 97 or the top mark in your internal marks is 97?

sorry, top external for our school in that subject is 97
I guess something around 95. Not sure of the exact mark. The top & bottom marks don't change but the marks in between do. The marks, not including top + bottom, get added together and distributed. Usually the gaps in the marks stay relative.

say this occurs...

myself and the top student absolutely kill the hsc

and we get 96 & 97

but then everyone else below us gets 89 and less

what will they then do to the internals?
would they consider us both outliers and then give us an internal unaffected by the rest of the cohort?

I think only the top & bottom marks are unaffected by the rest of the cohort. You would still be affected but I'm not sure by how much.

Depends on the externals of the rest of the cohort, but I'd say 95ish at a guess.

how about if myself and rank 1 were the outliers with a 96 & 97
and it dropped off to 35 - 85 from there

will we remain unaffected by the rest of them?

Then your internal mark would decrease. Try using this program to work it out, it can give you a really accurate idea of what might happen in your hypothetical http://www.boredofstudies.org/moderate.php
wow, really?

even if we are outliers? gosh, that really sucks

what if we are the only 2 smart kids in say a school ranked 700?

why should 2nd rank (who just missed out by 1 mark) by so heavily affected? pretty stupid system

You said in the OP that you were third, so if second dropped off I'd imagine your internal marks would decrease.
