Medicine for path into being a coroner/medical examiner? (1 Viewer)

Im currently doing a forensic science degree and was looking into undertaking forensic pathology in a path that will eventually lead me to be a medical examiner, However, i have no idea what the process is as no specialist degree is offered, would doing a Medicine/surgery degree be the way?

The person who analyses the body is a Forensic Pathologist a Doctor who has specialised in Pathology and with a subspeciality in forensics. It's a very long parth prob 13-15 years before you get in to Forensic pathology and if they have training places. Forensic Pathology

i went to a forensic science career afternoon the other week and nearly all of the workers there (pathologists, scientists etc) had a basic science degree and then did honours, masters, PhD and whatnot, and ended up being a pathologist.

be careful! there is only around 40 forensic pathologists in Aus, so finding a job as one may be difficult.

i also thought that a MBBS is needed initially...

u also need a law degree i think. i know a few of my friends got accepted at the beginning of last year into the combined law/med program.

no not necessarily
they told us that even though a law background may help, its the least of your worries because its more scientific than law. the closest thing you can get to anything related to law in forensic medicine is being the 'expert witness' etc in cases where you use your scientific knowledge etc to provide evidence.

around 80% of the people working there has a science degree as their starting block

oh yes. its either science and everything else as above...OR a medicine degree :uhhuh:
