I've recently finished Year 12 and am going to take a gap year off to work mostly before uni in 2010. I have never had a job before so what is the best way to go about getting one?

Is it better (or expected) for you to 'creatively lie' about your skills? Should I make up past work experience or admit that I've never had a job?

In the resume should I include a photo and should I also include school academic results etc or not?

Any general tips?

Thanks for any help you's can provide on this. I'll send whoever's the most helpful something good.

could make up some work experience and charity work
some places need specific experience though, and others dont care
depends on where you are applying
i tend to talk to the manager or whoever when i hand my resume in, just tell them what you have done, and seem eager to work.
and maybe go for the school results if you havent worked before. also stuff you did outside school
and check out some templates for your resume on the net

*no photo - its very tacky
*2 pages absolute max
*make sure you write an eloquent cover letter
*dont lie about relevant experience - they'll soon find out (when your skills aren't up to scratch)
*however, you can lie about interests and volunteer work though (as long as you tell your references before the prospective employer calls)
*don't waste your gap year working at a chain store... try and get a decent job otherwise future employers (post-uni) will think you 'wasted' a year
*use the resume wizard in MS word

Haha, don't listen to this guy.

Haha...eloquent cover letter.

He hasn't had any experience before. If I were him, i'd:

- keep it simple (KISS)
- outline sport/volunteer activities
- don't put a photo (some like it, some don't)
- don't put your results in (just tell them your level ie. Completing Year 12)

Unless you can handle yourself well under pressure, and are able to convince people on the run, don't write some lovely speel about your experience. Because, it will likely come back and bite you on the arse.

Just. Keep. It. Simple.

I agree with you. I reckon if it summarizes past experience, what you hope to achieve etc - it increases your chance of getting the job.

(yeah and i'm with the above posts - don't lie about experience)

no photo? why? I would definitely remember an image of a person than a pile of words if i were to be looking through dozens of CVs

Don't decide to take a gap year until you actually have a job. Don't lie about your skills and definitely don't make up that you had a job. Anywhere that is sufficiently shit that it doesn't call/ask for a reference for a previous job isn't somewhere you'd need experience anyway.

As far as i know, putting photo's on your cv is expected in asain countries. These days in Australia they don't require you to (unless asked), because they don't want to descriminate against you on looks. (anyway, thats what an interview is for). If you REALLY wan't to put in a photo - use something similar to a passport (with a plain background)

Don't include a picture, it's just sad (unless you're applying for position of prostitute)
TRIPLE CHECK for spelling and grammar errors. We get so many resumes at work with mistakes it makes us laugh.
Include things on the resume that are relevant to the position you are going for. There's no point bragging about winning sports awards and being the state captain if you're going for a retail job.
Don't go overboard with the 'achievements' section. I'm sure your parents were proud when you won 1st prize in the year 7 poetry competition, but employers really aren't.
I don't recommend lying, but if you have to, don't exagerrate too much, you'll be caught. Mention all kind of experience you've had, whether it's compulsary school work experience or babysitting cousins etc

Hopefully I'll get a job in a safe escort company, not some filthy brothel. I'm going around to see them and give them my resume tomorrow.
