do we need to know the history to do really well in English? like we pretty need to understand fully about our texts and all the issues that is being discussed in them. but is it necessary to know really well in the history (say the Holocaust) to do well?

No, its not necessary. Although, Knowing the context and the reason the text was written is a good idea. However, you don't need to know hundreds of dates and figures or anything like that.

knowing the context is the idea, just ask your teacher if you don't understand.
i.e. holocaust. just a simple definition is enough, but it might have a relationship with the writer, which is also important, simply to understand their feelings and attitude towards the "topic"
