could someone please give a rough idea on how it scales as in what marks gives you a band 6. I gave my students a "mock exam" today and they asked me to grade their papers as bands, but I have no blooming idea about the cut off marks

If some one could translate these marks for me:

I've done the 40% area of study conversion already, so the marks are out of 100

78/100 -
61/100 -
79/100 -
87/100 -
90/100
91/100 -
57/100 -
63/100

Thanks in Advance

Well, partially going off x jims raw marks thread, an 88/100 = 95/100 (this is total mark NOT total weighted mark)

78/100 - 82
61/100 - 72
79/100 - 83
87/100 - 94
90/100 - 96
91/100 - 97
57/100 - 69
63/100 - 74

Really rough and general idea.

Just give them the standard disclaimer ie. Thats a rough estimate, aligning standards change from year to year, the process is complex etc.

haha...trust them to be content with that! This should work with them - I'll say it's a rough idea!

sorry, to randomly post on this but what if these marks were actually for standard english... how much of a difference would there be? would you also roughly give me an example of the band classifications for standard... by using the above marks please :)

There would be a huge difference. The aligning for standard is shocking (I think it is one of if not the worst aligning subject).

I havent seen any raw mark conversions for standard so this is a really rough and unreliable guess:

78/100 - 79
61/100 - 61
82/100 - 83
90/100 - 91
57/100 - 59

but it actually doesnt scale down that low then? because from what i can see, they're remaining the same or either moving up by one?

Advanced and standard scale the same, but align differently. The process I'm talking about is aligning whilst your thinking about scaling done by the UAC to calculate the ATARs.

But aligning affects scaling right? as UAC take your aligned mark and scale it out of 50?

The scaling of advanced and standard are the very similar. But due to aligning more people get a 90 in advanced then standard, so in an indirect way they influence each other.

Standard:
In 2009, 61/100 raw -> 61/100 weighted -> 75 aligned, ~52 scaled

As a comparison, in Advanced:
In 2009, 66/100 raw -> 73/100 weighted -> 83 aligned, ~70 scaled

Note weightings :)

No, UAC scales your raw marks.

so standard and advanced scale similar and the scaled marks are used in the calculation of the atar? so why is it so damaging to your atar if you do standard?

Take another look at my post :p

You might also want to note: (2010)
the mean scaled mark for Standard was 34.6 (HSC mark = 64)
the mean scaled mark for Advanced was 65 (HSC mark = 81)

90th percentile in Standard got a scaled mark of 55.2 (HSC mark = 76)
90th percentile in Advanced got a scaled mark of 85 (HSC mark = 91)
