Sorry for asking a question very often seen around here but I really need some advice.

I've recently moved from NZ to AUS so the curriculum here is a little different to that of NZ's, considering there's some gaps in my knowledge - so where I was excelling at maths in NZ, it's not translated all that well to Australia's curriculum. I am absolutely guaranteed to myself that I'm not going to get a high mark on the Maths Yr11 prelim and would be lucky to break past a 60%.

I have the choice to drop down to Standard for Yr12, but the thing is I AM interested in learning the stuff in the advanced course as compared to Standard (ie. I want to learn how to do calculus/trig) but I made the grave mistake of not properly studying for it after school when I didn't grasp a concept in class.

There are two advanced classes; my advanced class is full of Extension Maths kids but the other advanced class is with people that just take advanced which I heard are merging for Year 12.

I was wondering if anyone could pass me advice for if they think it is possible for me to catch up on the advanced course within the next 2 week holidays or if it would be better to drop down to standard and get a high ATAR scaling based on that? I could learn the advanced material alongside standard material when I'm interested but that wouldn't give the qualifications for Uni. I also don't have a tutor/am unsure how the tutoring system works so any advice on that would be appreciated.

FYI, I do take physics and I intend to work in STEM/IT so advanced maths knowledge is important, but I'm not sure if I want to go through the hassle of taking bridging courses in Uni. :/

ur delusional to think uni would be easier. at uni im pretty sure u start at extension 2 level. besides, even if ur atar is slightly less from doing advanced, u still get 5 points for a band 6 at usyd and 3 points for a band 5. for unsw they changed it to be 3 points for b6 but thats cause of dei schemes

gateway, unsw college and early entry stuff. unsw has gone dei for some reason. meanwhile usyd barely has any dei schemes

unsw is diluting their prestige even without a financial incentive🥀

I don't think I implied uni would be easier. I do understand that it is assumed knowledge to know up to extension 1, though. Didn't understand much of the second part so man, I need to catch up on how ATAR works lol

That's motivating. Thank you!
i didn't even mean this as a motivational thing btw, i'm dead serious - its literally just work ethic
i have mates who went from getting 30% in year 11 to now topping the grade lol
make note of what worked well and didn't work well this year (both study habits & your approach to maths), and revamp it next year

wym without a financial incentive
more intake = more money, + clearly it hasn't impacted their academic reputation thus far
usyd is pretentious asf, who cares about 'prestige'

more intake could have been done via normal atar + hsc plus points entry. UNSW is a very high demand uni, it's impossible for a course like engineering to not be fully taken. however, the dei schemes have increased the normal entry LSR from 90 to 93 (2025 december prediction)

A large majority of the dei candidates will likely drop the course, so it doesn't even look good for unsw either

I'm kind of in the same position as you except even though you've changed from NZ to AU school syllabus/cirruculum you still score higher than what I'm going to get for math advanced prelims we just did it today and I can tell you I'm not breaking even 40% maybe, but I still plan to continute with adv maths to yr 12 next term, i plan to use the holidays definitely to study and hone my skills up to date, but yeah you definitely shouldnt drop to standard that stuff is way too easy, and you get dumbasses in standard math wouldnt want that all year for year 12 would ya

Nah man, don't even worry. I used 60% as an example but I'll be jumping for joy if I get 40%+ HAHA. I'm glad to know there's someone else that relates! We got this. ^^

Don't drop mate if you are actually interested in the maths, then you have the potential to go a hell of a lot further than other students. James Ruse only lets students study advanced and above, so imagine how many students go to that school and don't have the option of dropping. Some probably don't want to do advanced, and yet they still achieve a good mark. Your interest in this subject will excel you further than those that aren't interested, but do it because they have to.

but why did u drop. Do u regret it? I'm gonna have to stir up a good excuse as to why I did bad then if my teacher wants me to drop. It's mainly cause I just need to lock in harder and get a better teacher but obv she won't want to hear that
