Let's say I plan to do 10 units for my HSC next year and during my prelims, things go horribly wrong and I fail a subject (<50%). What would the consequences be? Would I need to repeat year 11? If so, is it solely based on my prelim or my overall report mark? Thanks in advance!

You do NOT have to repeat for failing a subject. If you receive an N-Award, then you may have to repeat (these are usually reserved for non-serious or non attempts, in addition to excessive absences).
So basically, if I fail a subject, it would depend on the teacher whether or not I try my best or not? My attitude is the deciding point?
Pretty much. Obviously, I'm not a teacher, but from what I remember in High School, N-Awards are only given in extreme cases - like people who never show up to class, or those who dont try and get ridiculously low marks (i.e. less than 20%). Usually a person would get multiple warnings before an N-Award is given - like I said, it's usually for serious cases, not run of the mill failures (if it were, half the state would repeat).

The reason I ask is that that concept doesn't apply to the BOS anymore.
If you haven't had an N warning yet you won't have a problem, even if you get less than 50% on your exam.
Just a note that in many courses in the HSC getting less than 50% raw can see a student with a reported mark of a low Band 4.
If you get a mark of less than 50% in either Year 10 or Year 11 it will be up to your school to decide what grade to send in for your ROSA e.g. in one subject a mark of say 44% could be a C and in another a D or even an E - that will be up to the school - based on the performance descriptor bands and the difficulty of the assessment set by the school. At my school for instance a mark of 44% would be probably a C or a D but not an E.

There's someone in my class for eco that has completely failed, but its alright, according to the social science head teacher.
For the 10 units, for you to go onto the HSC with those ten units: "you must satisfactorily complete 10 units at both the preliminary and HSC standard".
The other units, don't worry too much about it, just try not to fail too hard... I meant at least try pass?

Hahaha omg no you will not need to repeat!!! There would literally be no consequences besides a sore ego and disappointment. If you want my advice, don't do 10 units for your hsc- if you're so worried about failing a subject for PRELIMS, you'll probably need a back up for your actual HSC.
you can still N-award
As has been mentioned earlier, they are more or less for non-attempts, non serious attempts or for those absent for a large amount of days.

No you don't. If you fail a prelim, it's suggesting to you that you need to pick up your game and work out where you are going wrong. You can either drop the subject or keep it if you can handle it.
Its up to the school you go to if you get a subject that has a lower course on it for example advanced english they might lower you to standard or fundemantals but you should have had 12 units in year 11 to be able to drop
