Hey :)

So I was wondering about class numbers and dropouts, in particular for extension (usually smaller classes) and accelerated subjects where you'd be doing the hsc exam this year.

What were the starting class sizes? How many people have dropped so far? How many people do you predict will drop by the end of term 3 or drop after term 3? What class size do you think you will end up with?

For me
Advanced English: we have about 25 people, no drops. I think we may have about 2 drops.
Extension English: started with 10 people, now have 8. They couldn't be bothered. Maybe one more drop.
Extension Mathematics (this is one class with combined Math and Extension, unlike English): started with about 20 people, and 3 have dropped. One was a new girl who couldn't bother turning up for early classes; one got an 'n' warning because she got <40% on the exam and had to drop; one because she was away for about 2 weeks and just couldn't catch up. Our class is like one big family (we've all been in the same class for four years and love our teacher), apart from the newbie, it was sad :( oh but we might have another newbie. I think there will be about 6 more drops.
Bio: i think we have about 18 people, no drops. I'm going to drop after term 3 though.
Ancient History: about 30 people, no drops. I think maybe 2.
Music: I think we have 12 people. We've had 3 drop so far, I think there might be one or two more.
SOR I (accelerated): we had 8 people, 1 has dropped. I think one girl is considering dropping, but she's dedicated, so I think we'll be sticking to 7 :)

I love my math class - I don't want anyone to go. I love religion. And music is great. But for the other subject, as for classmates, I wouldn't mind a few drops haha.

From my experience in the HSC, the average drop out rate for most subjects is around 15-20%. However, this usually can vary significantly depending on the subject, the teacher and peoples results (i.e. if everyone in the course does bad during prelim/first parts of the HSC, the dropout rate will be higher).

Can schools really give an N award for poor performance?

I doubt it, but maybe its possible for marks which show evidence of a non-serious attempt (i.e. getting less then 15% in a subject). But I'm not 100% sure.

Advanced English: 200 people, we don't offer Standard
Extension Maths: 190 people, pretty sure no one dropped, and a handful picked it up early last term
2U Maths: like.. ten people? :$
Extension English: 140 people, about a dozen dropped it I think?
Chemistry: 140 people, not too many drops
Physics: 120 people, no one dropped I think

I think a few people will drop EX1 in Year 12 when they pick up 4U maths. Other than that, pretty sure there won't be other significant changes. All numbers were rounded to the nearest tens!

Ext maths started with 10 down to 9 now, will probably get down to 6 or 7 by term 4

In extension subjects (only) at our school we get N awards for <40%, I'm assuming because extension is something people take up as an 'extra' and you are meant to put in effort (as in any subject). If someone is failing a higher class, they would be expected to move down. It's always worked that way in my school. It seems logical.

Well just going how many dropped out.
Adv Eng: About 10 people dropped out?
Maths: About 15 people dropped out
Bio: Only about 8 people dropped it
Chem: Like 20-25 people
Modern: Like 12 people
Eco: A small number, but a small class to begin with so exactly 50% of the class dropped.
(I feel it was mainly to do with the yr 11 teacher, yr 12 teacher is amazing and I actually miss eco a bit)
EE1: About 5 people dropped it, most early on due to morning classes
EE2: One person dropped out

Ext. English: Had like 10 that dropped from a 45 student cohort
Adv: Few dropped from the top class, maybe cause the teacher's a dragon (good teaching dragon though), works us hard

I don't think so, only non-serious attempt. Some got 0 for a Maths exam and didn't get an n-award, he actually couldn't do any questions.

One guy dropped out of physics and picked up legal.
Two dropped out of Maths Ext 1.
Everyone loves English Ext 1. In fact, we've gained two students since we started.

No one has dropped from any of my subjects... yet.

Which is a shame. Half of my modern class can barely locate Russia on a world map.

And I'm predicting half of the extension maths cohort to drop, me included. So from 28 to.. 15 at most.

English extension is downright lol. 5 people in the class - 3 wants to drop for sure and 1 is still unsure. So if it's only me in the class for the HSC... Well I don't need to worry about rankings anymore do I?
