Did anyone find the stem cell question hard? if not, how did you answer it?

Re: 2011 HSC Biology Paper

according to ur answers, i got 17/20 for multiple choice... question 8 - please explain to me the difference between killer T and cytotoxic T cells: i thought they were the same >_<
cytotoxic are specific in killing virally infected cells, whereas killer cells kill all of them or some shit... no idea. :(

I found it one of the more difficult ones. I talked about perfluorocarbons and that fact that they have singular functions where as stem cells when they differentiate/specialise will be multi-purposed as they can imitate blood cells. It was the only question I was unsure about apart from that Y lizard one.

The MC killed me, which was disappointing because I've been getting 19/20 on most practice papers. I think I got 15/20.
I said the reptile study was inaccurate because it didn't take into account behavioural adaptations (basking in sun in morning/afternoon and shade in the middle of the day, etc) as they were locked in small cages, would that get me marks?
Also I had no idea about the number for sound so I talked about the different habits and different structures for hearing and how hearing was used, how many marks do you think I'll lose for that?
I got 20/20 in all of them except 2010 the night before which put me off. lol
You might get marked down. Depends if they're strict.

wow 1 page, for a 2/3 marker.. overkill much? hahaha :p
nah it's good.. others in my class finished with like an hour to spare.. I ended up finishing just as the examiner said put pens down, coz I wrote so much.
I needed to otherwise I couldn't have gotten the marks.
Really? I had a first run-through where I skipped the 4, 5, 7, 7 markers and in the first 45 minutes, then I took my sweet ass time and realised I had 45 minutes to go and 2x 7 markers and a 4 marker to go. XD

With the MC, is killer T cells same as cytotoxic T cells? I mean the way I learnt it at school we called it killer T...
This... I never learned about cytotoxic T cells.

Yes. I BSed it.
Disease from blood couldn't spread because it was taken from the skin cells not the blood.
Longer shelf life if kept as skin stem cells and later changed into blood cells.
Lol. No idea.

I still can't believe you were unsure of the Y lizard one. I set up the data loggers at our school. XD

me too! Very frustrating! I said the stem cells would be a natural alternative to perfluorochemicals and would mix better in the blood stream?.. not sure:/

i know wth was that!? i put X as a body thermometer and Y as a processor? I dont even know...
Same I put X - Thermometer and Y - Electronic processor? I think if you put something that is reasonable then there is no reason that you won't get the mark for that.

That sounds right...thats what i put. I said that while perflurochemicals are synthetic and do no cause disease, the stem cell blood is already mixed through lipids ect..

Feeling pretty discouraged after this exam. Thought I could aim for a band 6, guess it won't happen any more :(

- The skin stem cells used as an artificial blood could replicate immune responses (white blood cells). Perfluorocarbons, which are man-made cannot replicate these functions and therefore this is an improvement.
- The skin stem-cells are also taken from the patient that requires the donated blood, therefore since it is from their own body - markers are 'self' and won't be rejected by evoking an immune response - this makes it very successful as a red blood cell/white blood cell replacement. Perfluorocarbons at the moment form hydrophobic emulsions with lipids and therefore do not mix well with blood. This proves as another improvement when using the stem-cells as artificial blood.

gah for the communication option =.= I wrote wavelengths and nanometers instead of frequencies and hertz for the hearing question -.- I'll only lose one mark for that right?
I did the same >_<

This was the one I really struggled with. In the end I went with killer but I think now that may have been wrong.

I think they are the same, but I think that Killer T cells is just the name that you call it in school, I'm pretty sure the actual name is Cytotoxic T (Cyto = cell, Toxic = killer) that's how we learnt it in school at least..

So would Cytotoxic T be the correct answer?
