I'll agree with Cyph, but it'll be 80+ if there is major improvement in the HSC exams.

and it can't be NSBSH, coz there'd be more than double that amount doing Advanced English

According to the Daily Telegraph calculations, Reddam House was ranked 7th out of the private schools and 17th out of all schools in NSW..
Most people tend to think of all the schools in the state when they are indicating a school rank, not just the type of school.

i think the whole thing is kinda dodgy
it says it got like 20 people getting over 90 uai
how does that rank it 17th overall?

I think it's based on the number of students achieving in the top band (i.e. getting on the merit list) rather than anything to do with UAIs... the Board stopped releasing UAI info after the Mt. Druitt incident in 1996, in order to prevent the construction of "league tables" based on the UAI. And so, naturally, the media just constructed them based on something else.

wouldnt that mean schools with higher populations will have an advantage automatically?

Erhm. Yeah. Maybe it was done on proportions. I can't remember. :) Minai would know.

Well, the ranks are primarily based on the number of appearances on the merit list (that is, the "Band-6" list). So the more people you have in your school, the more likely you are to achieve Band-6 ... and so forth. (Which is why selective school do well, they have more people than most schools and many of them achieve Band-6 in at least one subject.)

Yes, but it's still all proportional

In the newspapers, schools are ranked based on their percentage of merit list mentions - which is calculated by the number of merit list mentions divided by the number of exams sat.

eg...XYZ high school had 20 students, each did 10 units (5 subjects), therefore the number of exams sat at XYZ High was 100. Say they got 30 band 6's from those 100 exams, the percentage is worked out as 30/100 = 30% (which is a lot).
From memory, James Ruse's percentage was 55.xx% in 2002

Well, that's not entirely true (from memory), because they only do that to rank school in terms of their performance in the core subjects of English and Mathematics.

Hmm, I'm sure thats the method they use (SMH)
I've seen it also on the North Shore coaching college glass window in Chatswood,

eg they have
James Ruse Exams sat: 1026 % of exams in Band 6: 55.xx
NSGHS Exams sat: 726 % of exams in Band 6: 49.xx
etc etc

and the ranks on the SMH are the same as the rank list at North Shore

I think they had both separate english and maths lists as well as an overall list...
