so im thinking of applying to some casual jobs in retail, but the unsw timetable is cooked, ive managed to arrange it so its basically 9-4 tue-thur and monday off, and i feel like no retail jobs will hire me with such limited availability. any advice from uni students who managed to work retail jobs?
should i a) give up on retail and just do tutoring, or b) stay unemployed cause unsw engineering will cook me, or c) just keep applying for jobs anyway, or d) other suggestions

d) Keep applying for jobs (make sure to go for casual only as time is money so may as well get paid a lot for it), and if u stop getting shifts, just apply for another job. Wtv u do, prioritise your degree tho. Just tell them that u r able to work a lot during the holidays or give false hope and say 'this timetable is temporary and my availability can change soon'- fake it till u make it.

May I invite you to offer your tutoring services DIRECTLY to schools. Yes, there are many students offering their services with private coaching but I you must also know schools pay for the expertise of outstanding past students to support those who cannot afford private tutoring. And it's not just the subject matter that you are offering - you are also offering the students your knowledge of settling into Uni life. You could create a program or course around THAT and offer it online! I suggest you contact all the schools in your area - perhaps reach out to the School Captains or Year 11 or Year 12 Deans. They need all the support they can get. You could then be tutoring in school hours or lunch breaks which would suit your hours. I know the IT department of my son's school when he attended was desperately looking for staff to be employed but the Year 12 students were too busy with their studies. Also, consider coaching in a sport with these schools not just the academic side of things. Furthermore, these schools come with their past papers and resources so you wouldn't have to bring your own or you could contribute yours too. (IP considerations would need to be considered!) It could be a win win for all!

As for "UNSW cooking you" with ENGINEERING content - please reframe this. You are more than capable of handling the load. You got IN. This tells me you are a high achiever and have the constitution of an OX! My son's tutor, Zack ex Reddham is doing Chemical Engineering at UNSW and has handled it with ease as in his degree and working part-time teaching at the school campus as well as tutoring over 12 HSC students each semester. He is going into his 3rd year of studies and has already paid off his degree and now saving for a home. Furthermore, he has had time to travel with his mates and enjoy his free-time. He DECIDED and DECLARED that he could do it all! And so all the resources, timing, offers and timetable adjustments fell into place around him and his schedule. You are limiting your power and rather giving your power away to the external. YOU HOLD the POWER! Own it.

As for the retail situation - does this really make your heart sing? Maybe you could consider working in a hotel or at the airport which offers casual employment and different hours for all casual workers. You must also know that these are business THAT also NEED you! We put so much focus on us not being in the position and settling for JUST what WE THINK IS AVAILABLE when in fact there are limitless opportunities if YOU DECIDE THERE ARE! It's a decision - you are NOT just sentenced to what you think Uni life is about to unfold for you. There maybe jobs there too - like supporting roles for Professors as tutors or mentors for new students as in job roles in the academic admission centre. It's just a conversation with those who are in these roles now. Uni life is fabulous when you open your mind, try everything that you think might or might not be for you. Let it be fun. Let there be flow. You have so much to look forward to.

during my undergrad I applied to a lot of retail jobs during the summer break until I landed one and started it during feb (weeks before uni started), idk if I had a timetable for sem 1 at that point I think I just told them I’m free everyday right now but might be free less days during uni (currently unsure of which days), gave me time to get trained and basically build good relationships with my manager and coworkers and this made it easier to say I’m less free bc of uni later on, rosters changed weekly based on availability I think, I keep saying I think bc I don’t have long term memory 😹

so in case retail doesn’t work out for you rn then I suggest applying during summer break earlier the better bc they can maybe be more forgiving once uni opens

another thing is that I didn’t give a shit about my undergrad and was happy to miss lectures, I turned up to tutorials and labs and and stuff but that was limited to like 2-3 days, if I had a morning class sometimes I’d go for an afternoon shift so yeah it kinda worked

if you don’t plan to miss lectures then your timetable would definitely be more “cooked” and restrict your availability for retail unfortunately, imo anyway

tutoring is a very uni friendly job it’ll be less of a bother to your studies, esp if you do private tutoring online and can be as flexible with time as you want, it’s good money too if your rate is high, ig boring compared to retail but sm easier and less tiring

private tutoring is great, esp with good students/parents that you get along with it’s fun and usually pretty flexible if you have something come up. money can be a lot better than retail too, but obviously retail has benefits like solid multi-hour shifts and doesn’t take much brain power

Uni becomes before retail but you can make it work. If you do get a job you don’t have to sign up for too many hours. I only work two shifts during the week. Remember that work doesn’t mean anything in the long term but uni does, so if a manager is ever annoyed at your limited availability who cares.

As a unsw engineering student I lowkey just underloaded my dumbass can't handle three courses anyways. Also if you're open to hospo that's good too I was able to work 4pm to 10pm. I think working one weekday and one weekend is fair for full course load and I did something similar in my job

hardest parts are those boring ass assignments. They're so long, and I could not care less. I thought I had passion in CS, but I was wrong. I just wanna get my degree, and get out.

My advice is ChatGPT as much as possible. The assignments are rarely relevant to the exam. Im doing a wambooster rn, and I haven't watched a single lecture, yet am on 98 percentage for the quizzes. ChatGPT really is that good
