Why are chlorine and bromine ions acidic? (1 Viewer)

Basically the title. My teacher’s notes say that if you test it with litmus paper it should stay red meaning it’s acidic. Wouldn’t the Cl and Br ions be basic since they’re conjugate bases of HCl and HBr which are strong acids?

because HCl and HBr are so strong that like it tilts a tiny bit abovr 7 iirc. it’s like very slightly bwsic though I think

i was taught they would be extremely weak bases which is effectively considered as neutral and thus we just treat them as such

The Cl- and Br- anions are 115% positively certainly definitely NOT acidic!

How could they be? Acidity requires an ability to donate a proton (H+) under Lowry-Bronsted definitions or to be electron pair acceptors under Lewis definitions.

Chloride and bromide salts are neutral, they do not cause any change in the colour of litmus paper (red litmus stays red, blue litmus stays blue) as they are neutral.
