well, i got usyd combined science med, so i guess you can count that as getting into med.

Wow I want to congratulate everyone who made it in!! Good stuff...
For those of you who didn't, never fear! There are plenty more chances to make it next time and to even put yourself up against other propsective med students is no easy task. Good on you all!

Nah Newcastle isn't that hard.
Their UMAT marks are rather difficult but not too bad.
An interview is an interview.
And UAI is only 93.8 anything more and it doesn't matter, just make the cut.

As for the difference - nothing. For more info read the Newcastle application booklet available from the Facultys website.

yup, BMed is the exact same as MBBS. It's just that they felt like calling the course that way. Just like dental science compared to dental surgery

As for newcastle being hard, the umat/interview/academic isn't too bad, but it's the competition which makes it really hard to get a place.

its not difficult in the sense that the UMAT and UAI requirements are low, but you have to make sure you really make them impressed during the interview...

As for the difference between BMed and MBBS, there is none.

No im pretty sure B Med is different to MBBS. Correct me if im wrong, but Newcastle only gives you a B. Med whereas other universities give you a MBBS (B Med. B. Surgery).

on page 15 it clearly states

"Does the title 'Bachelor of Medicine' mean there is no surgery in the program?

No, it does not. 'Medicine' includes all the specialist areas within medical practice. Surgery is one of many specialist areas as, for example, are Obstetrics, Paediatrics and Psychiatry. Comprehensive training for all 'medical' specialist fields is undertaken once a student has graduated from the program within the hospital system."



But yeh, Newcastle are 'innovative' remember? The degree was made in 1978 so is relatively new compared to most of the other med schools.

So for those of you too lazy to read everything above; No there is no difference, as everyone here has been saying.

MBBS is derived from the older (latin) testamur MBBCh, or MBChB - Medicinæ Baccalaureus, Baccalaureus Chirugiae. This testamur is from a day when the two fields were still regarded more or less seperately (with surgery more commonly practiced by barbers than educated physicians). Newcastle, in light of its novel course, decided to create the name BMed as a reflection of their departure from the "old ways".

yep...I don't think Medicine should be conferred as MBBS because that's misleading. It suggests that Medicine and Surgery are different degrees which can be learnt independently. So I propose we all copy Newie's course title...heck everybody copys their curriculum anyways Why not take it all the way?
