RAM-RAIDERS deviated from their usual service station targets last week and drove through the doors of the Whitlam Library at the University of Western Sydney at Rydalmere.
Rosehill Police were called to the Parramatta campus of UWS last Wednesday morning after the automatic tellar machine (ATM) was stolen from the Whitlam Library about 4.45am.
Rosehill local area command crime prevention officer Constable Tanya Smith said a Nissan Patrol 4WD was driven through the double doors of the library and knocked the ATM off its hinges.
Constable Smith said police believed the ATM was loaded into a second vehicle and driven away, and the 4WD was left behind.
She said there was no description of the getaway vehicle or the persons involved.
Police have asked anyone who saw a blue Nissan Patrol 4WD 1991 model being stolen from Tiara Place at Granville between 12.45am and 4.40am on July 5 to contact the station on 9760 6199.
Vice-president of the National Tertiary Education Union (UWS branch) Jo Hibbert said the union was concerned about the incident and a proposed change in security staffing.
Ms Hibbert said an organisational change proposal circulated to staff on June 19 recommended reducing security staffing at Parramatta by the equivalent of five full-time security officer positions.
"While we are pleased and relieved nobody was hurt in this incident, it demonstrates the need at least to maintain the current level of security staffing at Parramatta and Westmead campuses," Ms Hibbert said.
