If you had have gone on Thursday, you would have been able to attend the Mamdouh Habib lecture by the socialist folk. The Spartacus clan also showed up and started bitching to the socialists. I found it quite funny actually...

Simply tell them that Castro is a fuckwit and you think Bush is the greatest person ever.
I think they like Chavez more than Castro now. I certainly saw dear Hugo on posters around and about, but no sign of Fidel - maybe because Castro's on his deathbed while Chavez is a young up-and-comer who shows how 'socialism of the 21st century' can work. It's so easy! You simply posture a lot about your new type of socialism while defining it only vaguely and using the distraction to accrue power to yourself.

One of the guys with petitions asked a friend of mine whether he supported the war in Iraq and he half-jokingly answered 'yes'. Apparently the guy's look was one of those really rare ones of intense, unimpeded hatred.

I spent like an hour looking for the archsoc stall...and I was supposed to be manning it. Stupid planners moved us from a prime position to on the outskirts facing the road. There should still be oppurtunities to join if you're interested.
Yeah, I got the sense that facing the road was sort of the doldrums of O-week. I think the Young Liberals got put in there as well. But at least the Libs were actually listed in the guide - ArchSoc might as well have not existed for all that the Bull was telling me.

Spartacus clan? What do they do?
Lol. Who knows? I think they were a bunch of 60 year old geezers who supported extreme right wing economic policies, and forcing workers into organised labour etc. The socialists were just as sad though. I asked one guy, a hippy, who was going to the Habib presentation where Carslaw 175 is, and he said he was looking for the same place. I asked him what course he was doing at uni and he says "Oh...I just...I just like hanging. You know?" Yeah, right. Afert the lecturer I was mobbed by the hippies giving out pamphlets. Moral of the story, all hippies are douchebags.

(moral: never actually stop to talk to these people if you're not interested) lol. i havent got anything against them btw. just didnt want to sign up.

@ brucemaster: ultimate frisbee? awesome
Are they the "free David Hicks" and "Bush is a terrorist" people?

Hey, politics is a bloody big issue on campus.

I joined way too many things on wednesday.
I'll probably be active in the photographic society and fabian society.
Im glad I got my access card on tuesday, saved me so much time during o week.

ps, i heard today sucked, i was there at the uni but only to explore the grounds.
Yeh I have the same problem as you and Cosmic.
Well it seems as if I've joined far too many clubs. I think I've joined about That's gonna be bad for time management's sake and the sake of my liver, concerning the beer at these Welcome parties. Sooner or later, I'll just be a loyal member to one of them- whoever's nicest to me.

So the purpose of O-week was to brainwash new guys into thinking that uni. is fun?

yeah. not that i have a problem with that. but they freaked me with how militant they seemed about it.
Yeah, same with me. I supported Kerry in 2004 (despite him being a flawed candidate) and I think David Hicks is probably getting a raw deal, but that doesn't mean I want to be constantly harangued about it and how it means the world is collapsing.

And it also irritates me that they think that the US pulling out from Iraq will magically create peace there, instead of leading to even more sectarian violence. But I'm not going to tell them that, because they'll never be persuaded so the whole exercise would be totally pointless.

I agree.
30 "free David Hicks" petitions and no anti-nuclear energy petitions. I appreciate everyone's concerns for foreign affairs.

Mention it to 'em then. Most of them are pretty intelligent people...cept for the hippies and have pretty well formed ideas. They changed my mind about VSU, but not about the Iraq thing that you mentioned. Lol, I asked how they plan about doing this, creating a utopian socialist state and they suggest violent civil war, and they were serious too. Strange people. Good ideas...sometimes, but still strange.

Do you need an access card to join the debating society? I wouldn't mind checking it out.
You don't need an Access card to join debating, because signing up to debating is just being put on the email list. We hold social debates every Wednesday night (the first week of each semester is a demonstration debate) and anyone can participate in them. You will need an Access card if you want to eat the food or enjoy the bar tab on Wednesday nights. You also can't compete for Sydney Uni at any of the major tournaments this year unless you're an Access card holder.

If you want to be put on the mailing list, send an email to Naomi (n.hart@usu.usyd.edu.au).
