The book was released in 1982, so most likely, it was set around then.

Its never really stated when the novel is set, focus more on where it is set. ie rocky, dark island.

it was set in the 1980's. it was mentioned in the first meeting of Cordelia and Clarissa's husband at her office. you sort of have to piece it together though.
