Our seahorse also faces backwards when our slogan is "I LOOK AHEAD". I think the designer has since rectified this - but shit. Bit of a blue there.
Which way is forward, which way is back and why?

right is right.
take that lefties.

in other news:
i wish the uni library would just give us the username and passwords for signing into online journals instead of having to sign through the library site all the damn time when i'm at home.
i know this isnt really possible since we would still be able to use them after graduation but yeah.

Forward is right. Because as English speaking Australians, we naturally read left to right. Therefore looking ahead is looking right. ;)
One of us needs to take that mfing seahorse down, I vote for Matt cause he's the mod. Anyone else with me?

i have no power at the ACTUAL university.
I barely have any power here!
If people rep me I'll send them an email. Something along the lines of this:

"Hai, my name's student 3110857,

My friends and I on BoS think the seahorse is gay, and that if we had to make a float for marti gra it would probably consist of naked seahorses, man seahorses.

So please get rid of the seahorse. We also propose these designs:

or

Regards, student 3110857"

I'd laugh at it and then just block your access to your student account for trying so hard.

But I wont, and I wont.

Propose genuine alternative designs/coat of arms? I personally would like a coat of arms, but given what the original image for our university was, I think the new design is well improved. It's not trying to be something it's not. That's what I like about it most.

Oi Cham, create us up some new logo's plez!?!

Pretty much just having a lulz bro.

But now that u being srs Newcastle only came about in the 60s-70s - it prides itself on its openess and practical learning, its hardly going to introduce a coat of arms for oldschool prestige.

A better idea would be if they put out memorabilia in an American college style which focused on the name, along the lines of this:

I'm actually a pretty big fashion enthusiast, prep/college styles are my favourite. I'd be willing to play around with some hoodie/jersey designs one holiday if I knew they weren't going to disappear into the ether.

I know man, I know. It's cool I wasn't being serious yo.

Yeah, UNCLE had the block letter/American Style jumpers before the new ones. Maybe they wanted to flaunt the new logo? The new design looks cheap and tacky.

I realise they aren't the type of university to introduce a coat of arms. All I was saying is that they probably should have looked at one when they became autonomous from UNSW. The motto of "I look ahead" doesn't exactly inspire greatness. :) Even then though, you could argue that the uni was formed too late for that.

i like the seahorse,
just not in it's current minimalist logo form.
Why's that?

the seahorse has always been stylised anyway.
it really was always more or a mer-horse
a horse with a fish tail.
I think it's an important symbol which we can quite easily conserve. It's probably the oldest symbol of our location and our uni.

and isnt there a coat of arms in the stained glass above the entrance to the great hall?
couldnt we just get that and maybe tweak it.

What exactly does the seahorse/mer-horse represent anyway?

Hmmm, in terms of weird/perplexing designs Macq Uni's [new] logo is also pretty ambiguous to the uneducated observer.

*walks to the Great Hall to check out coat of arms*

Yeah, it's probably the only other i'd choose from that selection, other than the successful last one.

What about placement of "University of Newcastle, Australia" though? It seems a little hard to place the writing around it, as the image would probably need to be small enough for the writing to look proportionate (a decent size), but big enough for it to be seen and properly distinguished.

Meh.

I think the hoodie (unzippered) looks fine. Shame about the colouring but I guess I'll get the black *shrug*.

Fucking lol at the top row of those pics though. Fucking horse-dragon or what?! Hahah

overrated-
the size, it feels quite small to me to be honest, when i was younger and went to the uni on the odd occassion it seem much larger

underrated-
quaility of the students and staff, im in chemical engineering which has a high 70s cut off but all the people ive talked to are really intelligent

i lot of people who do well just stay local for either because of friends, not wanting to move, or just a lack of money

I find the students are generally fair dumb, but I'm in a different degree.

Like some of the analysis you get from people in english is extremely poor.

The mature aged students in law (about 3 of the 10) sure are dumb too.

My grandad used to take me and my bro for walks around the uni grounds when I was little. He used to tell us stories about giants and I believed him because the uni was so massive. The uni is so not like my childhood memories. :(
