A connotation is a word with "other meanings" to the dictionary. So for example, home by the dictionary means a structure or a building. However, as readers, we associate other meanings to home like security, warmth, protection, food and shelter.

Repetition is the repeating of words. For example, forced and leave are repeated twice, so these words are glued into our minds; they stick out from all the rest.

So, if we consider these two literary techniques, we can decipher that this passage is repeating words with negative connotations. This is done so that the author can instill fear and angst into our minds and help convey a sense of meaning and purpose in the text.
