What happens to someone who misses an exam? Assuming they got a doctors cert and everything ?

Rather than having the exam mark worth 50% does the school ranking just get calculated from everyone elses exam mark or does actual school marks come into it ??

ie - If someone is sick, they were coming first in their subject but were going to fail the exam, they will just get the best possible mark without even trying ?

If it is impossible for them to sit the exam, then the school will submit an estimate of how they think the person would have gone in the exam. This however is only if there is co-operation with the BOS - a general doctors certificate for the cold cannot be used to skip the exam so you needn't worry about anyone cheating that way. It should also be noted that if the BOS believes there is insufficient reason for someone to be incapable of an exam and they do not turn up then it is an equivalent to dropping out - so it is always in a persons best interests to sit an exam if they can as they can always apply for an appeal on the basis of misadventure.

It seems highly unlikely that anyone who is topping a subject would be in a position where they are going to fail the HSC exam.

But if their illness/misadventure application was accepted, their examination mark would be set equal to their moderated assessment mark. This would necessarily be the highest mark for that year group.

I've heard that if you feel sick in the actual exam room and you inform the supervisors (and its quite obvious that you arent actually feeling well) but contiune to sit the exam, in the case that your external exam mark is lower than your internal, your internal mark will be more heavily weighted than your externals. Is this true?

The higher of your internal and external marks will be used for the external mark.

With any misadventure/appeal they willl mark any work you have done if you attended the exam just as if nothing happened. Your work will go through the marking process like everybody elses. If you didnt attend, a mark of 0 will be registered on the system.

After the marking has been done, they then go through the misadventure and illness appeals. If the mark given in the Exam is LOWER than the moderated assesment mark, they will use the moderated aseesment mark as your exam mark. If the exam mark is in fact higher, nothing changes. So you get the higher of the two marks.

So with illness/misadventure, your moderated assesment mark is like a minimum mark safequard, youre mark in practice cant fall below that.

i.e If you didnt attend, your mark was recorded as 0, but obviously your assesment mark would (you hope) higher than 0, so you get that mark.

Or if you were sick, and performed badly and got say 55% and your assesment mark was 90&, you'd get 90.

From the HSC rules and procedures:

16. Illness/misadventure appeals
(v) If your appeal is upheld, you will be awarded the higher of your examination
mark and your moderated assessment mark as your examination mark. Your
Record of Achievement will indicate if the assessment mark is used.
