This was so long ago...I doubt it would be helpful now but in case you are still wondering: Money was the main reason. It was considered foolish among the higher classes to marry someone of the lower classes because it would neither bring prosperity or reputation to family nor would it provide a secure future. Children from upper classes who ran off to marry someone of a lower class would be looked down upon or even disowned by the families. Granted, there was a leeway like, a son of a Duke could be married to the daughter of a Baron, provided she had a good dowry. Many families from the lower ranks of nobility looked to marry their children slightly upwards in society.
Remember, the was a quite wealthy middle class in those days as well so to marry into a higher class was not impossible but it would be hard nevertheless.
The working class people usually married the among working class.They were not 'encouraged' to do it, they just had no other option. Despite what they often write in romantic novels, the different classes were hardly in contact with each other in daily life so it would have been very hard for people to meet and develop feelings, just one of the reasons such a thing did not happen often. Wealthy men may have taken mistresses from among the lower classes by 99.5% of the time they did not marry them.
