guys can anyone answer me why EVERYONE is going to UNSW instead of USYD? Lit everone i know wants to go there, and i have no idea why LOL. I want to go to one but i cant decide, so which one is best? What makes UNSW so special now?

I think unsw is ranked slightly higher in the world than Syd but I doubt that's a reason

USyd is ranked higher than UNSW overall (both on QS and THE), although each university may excel more in specific fields (which would be reflected in field-specific rankings) than the other.

opposite: qs has usyd at 18 and unsw at 19. also uni rankings are scams. The only category on QS world rankings that usyd beats unsw at is sustainability (i dont see how solar panels change a unis ability to teach) and prestige. How on earth do you determine prestige without the ranks first??? QS sure as hell doesnt show how. is it employabiltiy? nope, theyve got a seperate categroy for employer prestige, which unsw wins in??!??!?

ngl uni rankings are pretty useless for the majority of fields, unless if youre interested in research in which case dont use qs and use something like leiden rankings which are based on citations and have no bias (or at least aim to demonstrate none through their methodology)

australia already releases their own government reports on unis anyway thatll tell u the grad salary and employment rate from different unis in different degree fields which is much more useful for most people, they also do a survey on teaching satisfaction although id say that every uni in sydney is gonna have mostly great lecturers and then a couple classes which aren't so well taught

pretty much all medicine programs are gonna be equivalent in australia, u get the stamp of approval for accreditation and thats it really
the curriculum is standardised so you wouldn't notice much of a difference, just go to whichever uni u can get into rlly, if one is closer to u try to aim for that because chances are placements will be nearby to the uni

It would be difficult to determine the more popular university, since both universities are large and are usually a top choice for many students (because they are both generally very good).

Like other universities, both USyd and UNSW offer a Doctor of Medicine program. Essentially, you should enrol at the university that makes you an offer (which may be a university other than USyd or UNSW). The specific university that you attend is not a major consideration for medicine.

UNSW: STEM >>>>> and laughable commerce, law and med when compared to USYD
USYD: maths is 100000x harder than unsw due to having to hand calculate everything and shit there is a tad bit outdated compared to unsw, esp their comp programs and engineering degree requirements but they are getting better. Their social sciences and med are far better than UNSW's.

Anything else, either uni is generally fine, really depends on the degree you wanna do ngl and no matter what degree, youre bascially comparing apples and a slightly larger apple ykwim.

I will say, tris are hell and UNSW is cringe asf for having them.

maths is probably comparable imo. commerce and law i would probably agree that usyd has the harder programs.

fwik, usyd has some big connections and sets their med students up with really good placements, networking and hence, a relatively great start to their careers

unsw is partnered with quite a few hospitals, so is usyd, so placement/networking opportunities aren't really different between the unis. the only thing that would make usyd better is that they have better international connections, although this isn't relevant for most people who want to practice in australia. med experience is prob quite similar between the two unis overall

transport isn't too bad since if you live along any of the train lines, you can just go to central and then take the 20min L2 or L3 ride to unsw upper or lower campus, the only thing shit is the industrial actions (of which one is happening this week which will take away 1 of 2 line rail lines to unsw during assessment/pre final exam season )) )

this doesn’t really make a difference they don’t make you hand calculate anything that hard and we had calculators in first sem anyway. usyd doesn’t do scaling which does make a difference but they tend to mark harder subjects/exams much more leniently in the maths faculty, which mostly offsets the difficulty difference (I experienced this first hand last sem I def didn’t deserve my result in maths lol). the faculty at least so far have also been pretty good in that they genuinely care about students, they made a ton of changes last sem based on student feedback throughout the sem

usyd comp sci does sorta suck tbh but a lot of the bad subjects are only in advanced computing not the bsc comp sci major so you can sorta make it decent by just doing that. it’s also a bit more flexible at usyd since u can do a double major with comp sci rather than having to do a longer double degree which can save a year which is pretty worth it
