Well, obviously they want to know how well you did in relation to all other candidates, so percentiles.

Think about it

UNSW use UMAT to cool down the uai cut-off for MBBS(uai 95+ plus interview plus UMAT )...... but ppl are going to try all kind of things to gain extra umat points( i won't be suprise in a few years time the umat cut-off will be sky high) ....... now how are they going to pick the most SUITABLE students ? Interview ? (hey, unsw let that two ppl who you going to talk to for around 40 mins decide YOUR future ? )...........BULL****.

Just think about it....... It was 99.7 uai to gain entry, and select students openly through hsc exam.......now they doing things in the dark.............weird.

I far prefer it like this, then having to get 99.7. Although not always the case, the majority of people who would get that UAI are usually not terribly well rounded people, suitable for medicine.

Last year majority of successful applicants got uai 98+......not too far from 99.7........now with the help of those UMAT preparation courses, umat cut-off is going to one direction only----UP.

I was just thinking it must be another way (better and fairer, not in the dark) to select a " suitable" applicants. AH, well thats life.

Not too far? There's a huge difference between 98 and 99.7.

possibly....but imho, applicants with UAIs of 98.5 and above are all the same since any discrepancies arise from test mentality on the particular day, making silly mistakes in tests, and the big one- nuances in english expression...
im sure there are plenty of academically capable out there (in terms of the "sciences") who would cane the HSC had their English results not been compulsory...I know this is true because many of us at SBHS are in the same position~

um no... out of the ppl who made med last year there were 8 who got 100 and 164 who got 99.00-99.95, the medium was 99.5. so if basically the UAI cut off is still right up there

That was the result for the first year intake by using umat and interview.......... really I don't see it wouldn't turn 99+ another year or two.

Students at a Med School were receiving their first anatomy class
with a real dead human body. They are all gathered around the
surgery table with the body covered with a white sheet. Then the
professor started the class by telling them: "In medicine, it is
necessary to have 2 important qualities as a doctor: The first is
that it is necessary that you don't get disgusted."

The Professor uncovered the sheet, sunk his finger in the butt of
the dead body, withdrew it, and then stuck his finger in his mouth
and sucked it.

"Go ahead and do the same thing" he told his students. The
students freaked out, hesitated and subsequently taking turns,
sunk their finger in the butt of the dead body and sucked it after
withdrawing it. When everyone finished, the Professor looked at
them and told them: "The second important quality is observation.
I inserted the middle finger and sucked the index. Pay attention
people. "

the person with the lowest UAI that gained entry into medicine last year was someone with a 95.2 <--according to the professor that was holding the Medicine Faculty Presentations on UNSW Open Day
