So I'm starting to tutor a class for English. Throughout the past year I've been private tutoring and I've always conducted my lesson in a Socratic way, with the understanding that it is the student coming to their own opinions and interpretations that matter the most as opposed to me rattling off the answers to them.
However I'm starting to teach a class and it's become a lot harder to get the same kind of critical discussion that I've had in my private lessons. I'm guessing this is because they are not very keen to talk extensively about what they think in a class situation in front of their peers, and because I have a more "distant" relationship with them as opposed to 1-on-1 lessons.
So for tutors - how do you conduct your lessons and what do you think is the most effective/ineffective ways of tutoring? And students, how do you judge your tutoring experiences? Which ones work for you?
But you can tell me about any fun, interesting or totally awful experiences - I would love to hear it haha!
