Depends, how long do you expect the books to last? For me, i was generally going through a book a term/semester for each subject, before any real damage could happen to the book

I don't think she's talking about text books!

I wouldn't bother. Books are usually replaceable if they get ruined by time and wear. If it can't be replaced, then contacting it probably isn't the best thing to do to it anyway.

I'm sorry to ask a silly question, BUT. Are we talking about Text books with typed exercises and theory and stuff which you buy as a study guide. Or Work books, as in the ones you write in and glue sheets in and stuff?

I always contact my work books because I love covering them in cool pictures and quotes and stuff. And it saves my chemistry book from a prolonged death by chemical saturation :)

To cover or not; what I've done:
Real Books: No
Text Books: No
Uni Workbooks: No, they change every 6 months anyway
School Workbooks: Yes, because they need to last longer

that is the question

.
It is preferable as it does provide quite a bit of protection but it does have a few cons:

-cost of buying contact.
-learning how to apply contact.
-time consuming.
-risk of screwing up and damaging the book.

OH. No! Why would you do that? Do you honestly beat your books around that much?. Contact doesn't protect novels from the kind of damage they are at risk from: spine bending, creasing, silverfish, brittlebook etc...

Library's do it because their books pass through the hands of many many people most of whom don't care about the book. If I buy a book I tend to find I'm a lot more careful with it.

Besides, the entire charm of a paperback is that slightly ruffled and worn look of a well read favourite. Why change that?

PS. I'm a bit of a book lover.

There is a certain charm to a dog-eared book. I just leave mine to be beaten up.
In most cases they're just the medium by which you take in what is written inside.

You guys are so right. I've been even NOT READING my books because I don't want to destroy them.
