Should I do extension English or not? I enjoy the subject but I am unsure as to wether or not I will be worthwhile for me to do the extension course. And if I cock up the exam will I be severely scaled down?

Cheers and thanks

Are you going into yr 11? If you like the more analytical side of english then you will enjoy it. If you're not really 'into' it then don't try. It's not a matter of scaling, only do it if you enjoy english. That way you will work hard and won't get scaled down....

you get a choice on nine electives:
Revenge Tragedy
Crime Fiction
Speculative Fiction
Individual and Society
Postmodernism
Retreat from the Global
Gendered Language
The Language of Sport
The Act of Reading and Writing
You then do *one* of these electives and you examine texts and look at the "big ideas" of the module and so forth - this constitutes lots of reading for unlike Advanced where you would only read something that you would quote in an essay, here you will read things to get an idea of the theories. This will culminate in you sitting a 2 hour exam at the end of the year where you will answer two questions, one will almost always be creative ie compose a crime/revenge/speculative etc text, and the other will be analytical, requiring you to write an extended essay on your elective. It should also be noted that the course work is relatively brief as my class finished most of the required work in approx 20 weeks(maybe a bit more) and now it is revision and investigation till the HSC, this however doesnt ensure easy marks for extension 1, as you're competing with a whole state full of people who may have had half the year to practice.
And also:
kami said:
Extension 1- if the Advanced English course looked at communication, you could say that this course was looking at literature, it has 9 electives of which you only get to specialise in one, however the electives are grouped into three modular divisions and these are: genre, ways of thinking, language and values. The first one, genre, studies the categories texts fall into and how they have evolved and changed according to the social values of the audience and composers to give us different conventions such as; the nosy old lady of the manor house solving who did what, the young apprentice who must go out and save the world while learning along the way or the all knowing detective such as Holmes or CSI's Gill Grissom. The second one, ways of thinking, looks at a school of thought or trend in text so to speak such as postmodernism or globalism and this module could be said to be one of the more philosophical in the HSC. The third, language and values, is essentially looking at how and why things are said the way they are and you could look at for example the social roles of the genders. When you sit the final exam for the course you will recieve 2 questions with the trend being for one analytical and one creative writing task. In the preliminary component of the course your teacher will design her/his own module, one of the more popular prelim modules has been to explore the gothic, alternative choices have been postcolonialism, romance and "the hero".
If there are any more questions feel free to ask:)

EDIT: Never decide purely on scaling, it is a form of acadmic suicide, and also if you cock up any exam you are screwed to an extent- this subject is no different.

Thanks for the help guys,
I apologise for my spelling mistakes, but I was in a hurry, and yes geniuses I am "the same kid from the history extension" thread as I am trying to ascertain which extension course I want to do.

On a happier note thanks to all of you who were CONSTRUCTIVE in helping me decide the exentsion course.

Just one final question, although I may have a passion for an extension subject, if I am a bit behind the eight-ball in regards to the rest of the state will I still lose out "big time" on marking (even to the detriment of my UAI) ?

Thanks once again,

Adam

If you do poorly as compared to the state average in *any* subject then you will do badly. It also should be noted that History Extension is a HSC only course but English Extension is not - it is both preliminary and HSC. It should also be noted that you don't *need* to decide right away - you could do them both for a few weeks and see for yourself, heck you might even want to do both!

Don't get all sour now. Do both of them! They are both interesting courses, and stop worrying about being behind the state and your UAI. Deal with those things as they come, you can drop either of the extensions at any point if you find them to be too much.

Hi,

On a general note, you're not always going to get the feedback that you want. From personal experience, members of the ee1 and ee2 forums (all extensions in general, I presume) are going to be a little more...shall we say... active? Assertive? On-the-ball?

An almost-duplicate post on different forums is going to draw attention to itself. And some people are going to comment on that. That's just the way the world works.

On the bright side, people *have* provided you with the answers you were looking for :)

Now for my own answer.

I fully back up what kami's said about choosing the subject because you want to. Remember that you can ALWAYS drop it (provided you have spare units), but you can't always pick it up. Also remember that the first term of Extension is going to be hard - but it does get easier when you get your head around the course. If you do decide that it's your thing, it'll be awesomeness :D Challenging, but good.

Yeah, everyone's on the ball. :p

My advice would be just pick the subject you enjoy more. Screw scaling. If you don't enjoy something, you won't get the higher marks, so scaling means nothing anyway. EE1 is a good course (better than Adv that's for sure), it's just a lot of work.

You're not doing EE2?

Oh, here's an opportunity to root for EE2.

EE2 rocks! EE2 rocks! EE2 rocks! If you love creative writing and are seeking an outlet for it, DO EE2!!!

On that note...do Extension 2 *because* you are creative, don't do it just because you enjoy Extension 1. Being a good genre analyst will not replace a writer's passion, which is what Ext 2 requires.

Just to add to the above, EE2 is *very* far removed from ee1 in regards to content. Ok, maybe not *that* far removed, but creative writing is an entirely different ballgame to essay writing. One you can study for, one you don't. :)

EE2 was my favourite subject last year. No contest.

i agree - do both. if you find you dislike one of them you can always drop it, though i have trouble seeing how anyone could dislike either of them

Hi there,

In yr10 I was in position where I was doing decently in English, but didn't really enjoy english that much. My teacher told me that I perhaps had the capability to do extension, but probably didn't have the passion for english in general to do so.

I found prelim ext english a pretty low workload, and fairly easy (relative to other subjects). However, this year I have found it much harder.

Anyway, I'd advise that you at least try it. It's just one unit, and just get a feel for the course before you do it. A lot of people say stuff like u have to have passion etc to do extension subjects, but truthfully, I'm not particularly passionate about 19th century paradigms but I've still done alright in the course.

We do Revenge Tragedy and it is god. Blood, lust, violence; it's not homework, it's social studies.

Plus, if you're a cheauvanistic pig - like me - you'll get some ripping quotes:

"Oh defiled woman, you are but quicksilver to a fragrant vice"

* Quicksilver - Used in 16thC England to treat syphillus
* Vice - If you can't work that out, you probably shouldn't be doing X1.

i did I&S and we all loved it...especially drooling over Darcy :p
it's not necessarily the social paradigms that are fascinating (though looking at the evolution of mores in society can be interesting) but how the composers are challenging them through their texts

ROFL, that is pure gold.

Where does it come from so it can go strait to my sig?

(I do Crime Fiction, and it's quite good. Anil's Ghost/Real Inspector Hound are brilliant, brilliant texts - and there's such diversity in what to pick for additional texts. It's one that anyone can enjoy. I would have preferred to do a module in texts and ways of thinking, but I've enjoyed genre.)
