Hi guys,
I'm currently in Year 11 - 2027 HSC, and aiming for a high atar. I don't have an exact target, just one that opens up my options post school.
Would greatly appreciate any tips for study habits, managing the workload etc. while studying senior subjects.
If this helps, the subjects I'm doing are:
  • English Advanced & Ext. 1
  • Maths Advanced (Accelerated) & Ext. 1
  • Music
  • Drama
  • Chemistry
  • Studies of Religion 1
Hopefully, if I can start the good habits now, they'll come easy next year.
Thanks!

1. Work hard. Goes without saying but there's no amount of smart work or tricks that you can have that will outmatch pure hard work.
2. Set yourself a really specific goal for atar such as 99.00. Also set yourself a really good reason for needing this atar, not wanting it. Can be something like making your family proud, or getting into a course you want e.g. Medicine. But you need to have a really strong 'why', otherwise when you go through obstacles you won't get through. You need to trick your brain into thinking you 'need' this result and don't just 'want' it.
3. Keep up extra curriculas such as sport, music or hanging out. This really helps to stay focused. If you have training at 5 every afternoon, it limits how much time you can study. For me this mentally forced me to lock in and get all of my work done efficiently before having to go to training.
4. Stick with good friends. Your results will be the outcome of your closest friends. If they are lazy, you'll be lazy. If they work hard, you'll work hard as well.
5. Keep a mistakes document for each exam and homework assignment. This will help you to see how you've improved as well as to not make those same mistakes again. This really helps when it comes to large exam blocks such as prelims or trials/HSC.
6. For maths, spam practice exams as soon as you learn the content. There is no other way really other than exposing yourself to the widest range of questions possible.
7. For chem, don't just rote learn, actually understand the content. Use Organic chemistry tutor and ScienceReady youtube videos to really nail down a deep understanding of the content.
8. For organising yourself, I like to use little sticky pads that show me what I am doing today, this week and this month. It helps keep you aware of how fast things will occur in Year 11. Trust me, the next few years will pass youj really quickly.

I'm sure there's more I could add if you want, but this is already a lot to read. Anyway, good luck.

Thanks so much, I'll start implementing those strategies now.

Drama - try to start on theory assigments as early as possible, then you get more time to fix it rahter than leaving it behind. Also i assume you would have to do a drama essay anytime this year. Make sure you know how to structure a drama essay properly, know what the markers are looking for, and its differences to an english essay. Also try read your plays/texts (I didnt read any of mine but i still got pretty well, but dont be like me, you will struggle alot!!). Feel free to send me any of your work on drama and I am more than happy to look over it and give feedback :)

but to actually answer ur question make sure to not burn urself out or stress urself out too much cause it's year 11 and even if u mess up it's ok cause year 11 is just a year to experiment and learn. But just learn good study habits, keep on top of ur work and don't leave things last minute. Also try to be productive and don't waste time and also have a good balance between personal life and school life

Here are some subject specific tips ig (for the ones i do too)

Math Adv:
- all i can say is just spam past papers. it's the only way you'll get familiar with the type of questions.

Chemistry:
- understand the content and not just memorise (esp for mod 1)
- with calculations just practice as much as you can as that will really ensure you don't make silly mistakes.
- definitely refer back to the syllabus every now and then to make sure you are ticking off the boxes. Do this especially before prelims as it will ensure you have covered everything.
- sometimes they do ask you to do experiments in the syllabus so make sure to know those because sometimes they do ask about that stuff.
- definitely practice your scientific skills cuz thats a very important part in most exams.

English Adv:
- read texts earlier
- seek continuous feedback

Overall, make sure to set a clear goal of where you're heading so you know what exactly to work towards. Personally, i recommend setting your ATAR goal higher than what you would need so it kinda forces you to work harder towards that goal just in case you fall short anywhere

And with all the study strategies may I invite you into some self-care?

May I invite you into creating a 'spiritual' housekeeping practice besides all the academic strategies which do work but I KNOW can cause burnout and breakdown especially when they don't go to plan.

There will be moments in this HSC journey you will feel anxious, frustrated, angry and powerlessness. These are normal emotions for the HSC System that pushes shame, guilt and terror into your system. There will be exam questions who have never seen before. You will be astounded that they asked that when you thought you knew it all. It will shock your system. It will mean you must dig deep into the knowing of your essence - your magnificence. It's building YOUR resilience and persistence.

You are a limitless BEING. Your IDENTITY in the END RESULT must remain FIRM when there are situations, events or exams that test your limits. You cannot waiver on your IDENTITY and what you are going to achieve no matter what. You need to have grace for yourself in these moments. Extend kindness not only to yourself but to others.

When you have in place a 'self-care' practice such as mediation - even sitting on your bed with nothing in your hand and closing your eyes and doing this regularly - just for 20 mins - you connect back to yourself. You get to call in God/Source or your spirit team to unload what you are feeling. You get to connect you to yourself.

Other practices:

  • Early night sleeps
  • No doom scrolling
  • Environments like others have suggested that are up lifting and nurturing.
  • Foods that are clean and nourish your body = you are preparing for the 'Olympics" of school!
  • A Study ASHRAM - a safe space that signals to your brain that it's time to lock in!
  • Mediations that up lift you and remind you of your greatness!
  • Self-Concept work that reminds of your uniqueness and just how special you are REGARDLESS of the grades or mark you receive.
  • Journalling or scripting on your END GOAL - you will be amazed what you discover about yourself when you just write out what you are feeling!!!
  • Embodying behaviours, words and actions that are in alignment with the END GOAL as if it's already achieved - this IDENTITY Work not just the study part which is the strategy BUT also giving your BEST at home with your chores, in your sport ! It's all signalling to SOURCE/God you are serious about the END result.

I invite you to create an INTENTION for your week.
This could look like the word : FOCUS
Now create ASKFIRMATIONS around THAT - everyday if you can.

  • Why am I so focused on my end result?
  • Why does my focus always gift me what I desire?
  • How is it that when I focus on the small goals - the BIG goals unfold effortlessly?
  • Where my focus is , it expands - so where can I focus on the good of today?
  • I am amazed at how my creative genius turns on when I am so focused!

The Reticular Activating System (RAS) of your brain will go and seek evidence based on all of that.

At the END of your DAY - please acknowledge what you have achieved to date NOT just academically but you REMAINING as HIM/HER in the END result.

Also - look at this list of your achievements to date - not just academically - and keep this list handy - you will need it when things are not going to plan - this list will remind you of your highest potential and that it ALWAYS exists in you.

Other practices:

  • No reacting just responding.
  • SILENCE
  • PRESCENCE
  • BEING in the NOW moment
  • Walks in nature - notice how abundant nature is and you are limitless in what you can create too!!!
  • Gratitude
  • Celebrating yourself , your peers and your teachers or even the ladies at the tuck shop (we are all soul aligned and your celebration is the highest energy you can play in) - it all matters - it is all witnessed by Source/God - who you are BEING.

HSC is not about the number or grade or acceptance into THAT Institution - it's a journey on who you are BEING and BECOMING in the process .

When you know you can MASTER your energy and actually send it ahead of time into exam rooms - you will KNOW you have the power to create what you truly desire. That energy soothes your brain - it unlocks all the information for that exam. You are able to remember just what you need to know in that NOW moment.

In this journey, you will learn of the deep connection to yourself and to others but more importantly you will discover that you are gifted so much support from Source/God/Universe which always responds to who your are BEING.

This journey will allow you to NEVER doubt your existence - not for one minute - and for the future - not for one job rejection or promotion or even not being accepted into your choice of University. You will just KNOW that you can handle anything! In fact, you can BE, Do and HAVE anything that you desire.

You are an energetic being living this human experience and you are limitless in what you can create when you undo the programming/conditioning that the SYSTEM has over you.

Go forth.
You are doing yourself super proud as you have recognised the commitment it is going to take - but it actually can be fun and flow when you put it all together!!
Just BEING fabulous YOU.
No rush.
Trust in the UNSEEN - that is where the true power is and supporting you always.
You are right on track.

I am rooting for your success!

Biggest thing is consistency. Studying one subject for an entire day isn't doing to help long term, make a plan and do a bit every day (such as plan to finish one syllabus dot point per day. It may not seem like much at first, but it builds up over time, and the syllabus is your best friend asw.
