“THE fast-food chain, Burger King, is withdrawing its ice-cream cones after the lid of the dessert offended a Muslim.

The man claimed the design resembled the Arabic inscription for Allah, and branded it sacrilegious, threatening a "jihad".

The chain is being forced to spend thousands of pounds redesigning the lid with backing from The Muslim Council of Britain. It apologised and said: "The design simply represents a spinning ice-cream cone."

The offending lid was spotted in a branch in Park Royal last week by business development manager Rashad Akhtar, 27, of High Wycombe.

He was not satisfied by the decision to withdraw the cones and has called on Muslims to boycott Burger King. He said: "This is my jihad. How can you say it is a spinning swirl? If you spin it one way to the right you are offending Muslims."

A Muslim Council spokesman said: "We commend the sensitive and prompt action that Burger King has taken."

Fair enough!

He's not harming anyone, he simply doesnt want to buy products from burger king. I think he's entitled to that option, and he's calling on others not to buy BK also, if they want to listen, thats their choice, if not then they'll continue to buy the product.

I think it may have been a coincidence. A similar issue was raised previously with the Coca Cola Logo, saying it read the words 'No Mohammad, No makka' in arabic when observed in a mirror. could just be a coincidence... who knows!

So whats ur opinion SashatheMan?

I dont have a pic, This was a while back (prolly about 3 yrs ago), however, when i read it (I can read arabic) It was missing a letter where instead of it meaning 'No Mohammad, No Makka' it read 'For Mohammad For Makkah' so im guessing it may have been a coincidence also!

Edit: Oh and just for clarification, its obvious that the man doesn't intend a physical Jihad in the sense of Blowing BK up or something (as Jihad has been conveyed by some of the media), As he clearly stated, that boycotting BK will be his Jihad! This is what Ive been trying to say about Jihad, Jihad is a struggle, a strive, and this man feels offended as he claims its offending his religion, therefore by boycotting the product he will indeed, be doing what is referred to as 'Jihad'.

whoa. i can definately see what the guy was upset about. i mean, it isnt the fact that it forms "allah" on it, but more the fact that this wrapper will always be on the floor or in a garbage bin. lol i doubt people are going to put it with their qurans and stuff!

uhh, yeah. he needs to grow up because the wrapper seems to disrespect his religion? i dont know about you, but i dont think i would like my gods name on the sole of someone's shoe, or among dirty things. im guessing that you have seen the pic of the wrapper? im pretty sure burger king would prefer to pay a bit of money to make new lids instead of sacrificing alot of customers.

burger king is just scared their headoffice will be the next suicide bombing target.
i doubt that.. but another issue was raised when nike came out with the original air nike shoes which also seemed to show the name of ALLAH in arabic.. i'll try and get some pics but can't garantee. anywayz back to the issue yeah it's not like ppl are just gonna destroy BK just because it could have made a mistake. they fixed the mistake and the muslim leaders thanked them for it.. nothing happened and i doubt anything will happen.. let it also be known that if something does happen in regards to this issue then the person who insigated it will be a fool in my opinion

Or it can be as devastating as discovering a multi-million dollar ad campaign and product release must be scrapped. In a previous article we related how Nike was forced to recall thousands of pairs of shoes in 1997. The flame design on these shoes inadvertently resembled the Arabic word for God (Allah), and Muslims saw this as a desecration. Facing worldwide protests and boycotts of their shoes, Nike implemented the recall.

Arabic tradition holds that the foot is unclean. Protests are sure to erupt any time the word Allah is put in contact with the foot (or other unclean parts of the body). That is where Nike encountered problems. Nike marketed a series of basketball shoes (including the Air Melt, Air Grill, Air B-Que and Air Bakin' series) with a decoration intended to resemble fire. Unfortunately, when viewed right to left (which is the way Arabic is read), the flames resembled the Arabic word for Allah. Nike is not the only footwear company to have made that error. Some years ago, the Thom McAn company had a similar problem.

Nike Shoe Corp. Builds Playground for Mosque Atones for Offensive Logo
Falls Church (in the neighbourhood of Washington D. C.):

Shoe manufacturer Nike Corp. began building a playground for Muslim children on November 22 and a bridge with the Islamic community — and making amends for one of its biggest marketing embarrassments, according to Washington Post.

Post staffer Alice Reid said about two years ago, Nike came up with a new shoe and emblazoned the rear edge of its sole with the word “Air” written in what looked like flames. The only problem was that the squiggly lines made the word look like Arabic script for the word Allah, and many Muslims object. Under threat of a worldwide boycott of its products by 1 billion Muslims, Nike recalled more than 38,000 pairs of the offending shoes last year. Now, the playground, to take shape at the Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Centre over the next two months, is part of the company’s agreement to include Muslim educational centres among the recipients of its $34 million annual community grant program.

“We wouldn’t have objected if the logo had been on a hat,” said Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations, which protested the logo last year and negotiated the agreement with Nike. “But on shoes, it was very disrespectful.”

Now, working with the council, Oregon-based Nike is building playgrounds at the Falls Church Islamic Center, as well as other centres on the West Coast and in Michigan, company representatives said yesterday.

“We certainly never intended to offend,” said Nike spokesman Roy Agostino, who was on hand with other corporate representatives for the groundbreaking. “Our company has to be more vigilant and work more with communities on issues of sensitivity.”

Omar Ahmed, president of the council, said Dar Al-Hijrah in Falls Church had been chosen for the first of the Nike-built playgrounds because “this community is one of the most racially and ethnically diverse in the nation, with Somalis, Arabs, Egyptians, African Americans and whites,” he said.

The centre — one of the largest Washington area mosques — draws 1,200 worshipers to its Friday prayer services and enrolls 700 children, ages 4 to 14, in its weekend Muslim education programs. In 1992, there were barely 200 children attending the centre’s lessons in Arabic language and Qur’anic studies, school administrators said.

If one is a devout Muslim, then it is an important issue to them. It's like how Christians got upset over the Da Vinci Code.
