Put simply, katakana used for native Japanese word is applied in a similar way as bolding or italicising in English. It is used to give emphasis to an object, action or idea.

As Lexi said, its main purpose is to emphasise what Oto is trying to say. For example: he writes boku in katakana to emphasise that he is different to other people.

But it also is trendy, which is useful to Oto's purpose because he wants as many people as possible to understand that "disabled" people are still people.

Stylistic Tool of the author

Thats what our teacher calls it - a stylistic tool of the author. It fills space, sounds intelligent: perfect!

PLus everything everyone else says!
