This is a worthy thread, McLake, so try not to close it down too soon (please).

There seems to be a belief (on this forum, at least) that an association with the 'left' is something that one should avoid at all costs (White Rabbit in the 1 July thread, for example). Basically, I would like to know what is it that makes the 'left' dirty, as some would say. More often than not, people seem to argue that it's to be expected given the simplisitic rantings of many on the 'left', but as we all know that is hardly limited to any particular political stance.

Does anyone (I'm thinking of NTB and possibly Jonathon A in particular) have a some what rational answer?

The simplistic, often ignorant, ramblings of the left usually does it for me; see the nuclear power thread for a perfect example ('chernobyl, oh noes!'). Also, the whole 'save the world, everyone be happy, love everyone, money = bad, lol hitlerbush' thing they have going just makes the comparison to dirty, pot-smoking hippies too easy.

I know that the left is associated with dirty, but that is just in general.

I’m not sure why you are pointing out that it happens on this forum in particular, because the large bourgeoisie of people here seem to be simpleton lefts, who let inviable opinions pass by them willy nilly. I appear to be the only convicted authoritative right on here (well for as long as I have been on here that is).

Just as the left is associated with being “dirty”, “idiotic”,"air-headish","unrealistic" etc, the right is considered to be “narrow minded” or “old” (or what ever) by the left. It’s just our way of despising each other. The difference being that the left are in fact Dirty Idiotic Ferals :p and the right are not narrow minded or old. :)
y is it that u hate the left (and its supporters) so bad? Not trying 2 start a huge argument, but yeah im just interested 2 know. Ur posts are really agressive and attacking towards the left. why? (and dont just say coz their stupid and feral)

It's just that the "right" forms the standing majority here. Naturally, the "left" will take a hit because the "right" is over-represented.
It isn't that at all, Argonaut. The 'right' is in the minority, but its voice is far louder than that of the 'left'. However, with respect to the forum's heavyweights, it's fairly balanced.

Step foot on a university campus, and you will gain a whole new appreciation for our complete and utter hatred of everything left.

I used to be indifferent to VSU, until the loud mouthed hippies of the 'socialist alliance' started harping on about it, along with a plethora of other things.

even tho i dont fully agree, i understand where ur coming from - alot of unis are left and there was alot of discussion about it in my tutorials, of the leftist nature of a particular unit. So that makes u hate everyone left?

No, the fact that most leftist views oppose my own makes me hate them.

Edit: hate the views, that is. I only hate those who hold them if they are obnoxious and loud. Sadly, it would seem that such people are never in short supply.

Lol ok, well (i dunno about you) but i think that we r smart enuf not 2 resort to childish name calling (which i admit am guilty of) to prove a point or 2 show our "hatred" of opposite sides. I think wer'e capable of having logical discussions, no matter wat side wer'e on

They are the representatives of the Socialist™ movement. In their case, they LIVE the anti-capitalist life. They will not dress mainstream, eat mainstream, live mainstream, in their quest to overcome the "capitalist" norm. Ironically, this means that they are a brand unto themselves - with negative connotations on not just themselves, but on All of the left persuasion.

a move from a left political stance to a right stance is common during higher education.

don't know how accurate that statement is but i read it in a book of political essays.

I, for one, see sense in that statement as when i had no clue about anything i would rant on like a leftist dumbass, but now im not to keen on the far left.

It can go anyway. Alot of prominent leftist in history grew from higher education.

For instance Lenin, people are not to sure what drove him to Marxism but it was during University that he began revolutionary thinking.

I can see alot of naive people who classified themselves as lefist or were classified leftist by other people, once they began univerisity and realised their career they may have been smacked with reality and did not correctly build on their leftism.

So it can go either ways.

Funny thing is its the ignorant lefties that change to right wing.

On both sides of politics there are people spouting off misinformed opinions. There are as many ill informed redneck/racist conservative types spouting off crap as there are lefties "ranting". I mean, look at how Hansonism took off in Australia.

I think a part of it could come down to the way that economic capital tends to be concentrated in right wing interests (obviously due to their ideology) and we all know money=power. So maybe this breeds a kind of ideology that the right is mainstream, and being left is a form of rebellion which some may find contemptable. Rebellion (especially of the non violent type) shouldn't really be viewed as something horrible. It is paramount in maintaining a healthy democracy.

But just to point out an irony here, anti-mathmite criticizes "simpleton" lefts, but in the refugee reforms thread you did not know about the legitimacy of arriving in a country to seek asylum due to international treaties and did not rely on any information to back up your argument. Do not take this as a personal attack, but while you might see a left opinion as a rant, I saw your opinion as expressed in that thread as an unsubstantiated rant. You weren't even versed in the various aspects of migration policy and legislation.

People in glasshouses shouldn't throw stones.

Even though I am a lefty, I can read an argument by a righty and acknowledge that they are informed, and have formed an informed opinion, even if it differs to my own. But basically some people aren't that interested in politics and don't have information behind their opinions. And this occurs on either side of the political spectrum.

It's only that in political arguement, mudslinging abounds. Apart of that includes playing off long-held political cliches. Two such cliches are that 'Righties' are snooty and that 'Lefties' are "dirty".

How ever to these people, i think that the Quarantine act needs to more apply than the immigration act
I would like to see the evidence upon which you formed this opinion. Because to me this seems like a blatant racist statement. You wouldn't like us lefties to start calling everyone who was right wing a racist, you should be more careful you don't let the team down. There are a lot of righties on here that have varying opinions on immigration detention however responding to your posts has been the only time the word racist has ever sprung to my mind.

And by the way, I am not attacking you. I am attacking your argument.

From an earlier post by you

In my mind making a statement that all people seeking asylum should be treated like animals or as vessels which may be carrying undesirable communicable diseases is narrow minded, and misinformed.
