My experience with lecturers is that they ask if everyone has finished, especially if its a diagram - however, most of my lectures only have less than 100 people in them. They will give you enough time. But the important thing is not to copy everything, but just get the main points of the slide. You can fill the rest in later from webct.
haha.. i already know for my psych 1A lecs there's over 250 people in them. i don't think the lecturer would wait for everyone to finish writing..

Just some advice if you are going to buy a recorder..

There are digitial ones avaliable now that obiosly dont use any tapes.

But if you are going to get 'tape recorder' i suggest not buying one that uses the small microtapes. Buy a recorder that uses normal size tapes......the tapes are heaps cheaper (the micro tapes are over $5.00 for a 60min tape) and they last longer.

But realistically, taping the lecture, listening back to it and copying notes or doing a transcript is very time consuming and doing this for every lecture is insane. I used to tape seminars/lectures in first year but soon realised that doing this was to time consuming and that doing assessments is the most important.

As long as u go to the lecture, take brief notes alomng with those provided on webct, then u should be fine. Also, the tutorial for that week should be based on the lecture.... so this helps even more to understand the lecture.

The lecturer may have a quit look around and get a rough idea of who has finished writing down quick notes. You will only need the basics, especially if your subjects use webct and you have textbooks.

Michelleanne is right, many of Business Law lectures I recorded using a pocket pc (thank god Pam Devery had a loud voice otherwise it wouldn't be picked up because EEG19 at Parra is SOOOOO big). The thing is I never went back to my lectures recorded, i only had them as a safeguard pretty much if the notes didn't make sense.

If you are going to buy a tape recorder, go for Tape, digital is expensive, many can't be transferred to computer (i have no idea what the point of that is). You can go with an MP3 player, Lexar, Sanyo, Ipod, Creative are some of the common ones with mics.

Exactly.. i'm thinking of just recording lecs on my ipod for "just in case" i can't catch up while writing the notes manually. especially if we have to rush, and we probably will with 250+ students/class, my writing gets really bad..

I think it's best to read the outline before u go into the lecture, then write up your extra notes from extra important tid-bits the lecturer states..

I think it shouldn't be too hard, and it'll make sure you're only writing down relevant information.

Yeah. See write up notes, then type them out. Before you print, do the readings and fill in all the extra stuff you got from the readings.

Example (and this is pushing it baldy but just a point)

Lecturer says these are some common torts (legal civil wrongs):

-Negligence
-Deciet
-Injurious Falsehood
-Passing Off

You go and do the readings with state what each is, then you add the new info into it:

-Neligence: Damage caused by one’s breach of duty of care.
-Deceit: A fraudulent untruth
-Injurious falsehood: Intentionally disparaging another’s goods or business
-Passing off: Misrepresenting business associations

Is it possible to read the readings BEFORE the tutorial or would no normal person do that?
Well if you have an assessment to present something or write about something that will be in a lecture soon (like I would) then you would need to read prior. Also if your tutorial is before the lecture (in some cases).

had to get a break from the political forum NTB. Never new there were so many people who admired the bureaucracy of labor governments.

On these forums the main vocal people seem to be those who support labor to those who support the socialist alliance.
In a forum vote before the election the coalition got almost the same forum votes as the greens, labor got something like double

i got a tape recorder, just never bothered with taping becasue your textbook and additioanl texts give you enough info as it is. i take notes, but getting it ffrom the book makes much mroe sense sometimes.

Well naturally they would. Its a bit like calling the police over for a break and enter, that's free, but you could argue our taxes pay for that.

I wouldn't worry about Psych 1A, you can't miss anything. Its all on webct and the readings give a really good overview.
