You should also consider the affect of technology that although it can create new possibilities, has also let the average joe bloe become a "musician" or "artist".

That's kind of uh, something we discuss at my music institution.

I also feel your survey is confused with itself. Replace "technology" with "the internet".

1. What is your age? 19 (20 this year)

2.Are you? Female

3.Do you listen to music? Yes

4.What form of music do you most frequently listen to?

Cd's & MP3(and WAV)

5.What sort of impact do you feel technology has had on music?

You mean the internet? Mostly negative

Explain your reason: If you mean the internet, it is easier to steal an artists' work, and there is very little one can do to control it. Although it has given access for people around the world to discover artists from other countries e.g. Myspace, Pandora and info on small bands that tour with your favourites.

6.Where do you purchase most of your music?

Shops and the internet.

7. Do you perceive downloading music for free to be a problem?

Not necessarily. A few artists and websites allow free downloading so that the artist can be exposed. But illegal downloading however is a problem and it will be hard for it to go away.

8. Do you agree or disagree with this statement “Illegal downloading of music cheats the artist and will eventually lead to the downfall of the Australian music?”

You'll find that Australian music is hard to find in search engines. Also, in a short term basis, you're stealing from the record label, not the artist. Australian music won't be stunted because of illegal downloading, however, mainstream australian music needs to climb higher in its general quality, musically speaking, to have a downfall in the first place.

9. Do you own an iPod or mp3 device?

Yes

10. Do you believe that ipods/mp3 players are a negative socialising factor i.e. they contribute to anti-social/isolating behavior?

No. Why does everyone think that? I listen to it when I know I won't be required to talk to. e.g. On the bus to uni, and alone when I go to sleep.

11.Do you feel that the advancement in technology in the music industry does not accommodate for independent artists yet supports songs such as the crazy frog ring tone?

Yes the crazy frog ring tone is unjust although it is just a fad no one will give a shit about. But I don't know where to begin with this argument. But clearly it is not about the advancement of technology, but social ignorance about good music, demand and media attitudes. I feel you're a bit confused with this question.

12. Do you feel that the impact of technology on music is different in other countries e.g. America and England compared to Australia?

No, but the 'impact of technology' is a very broad term in which you as a surveyer need to specify and explore yourself.

I don't think technology does either. It is without emotion or bias. It is the way we choose to apply it that affects the world. I don't think neccessarily this application has been to the detriment of Independent Artists.

12. Do you feel that the impact of technology on music is different in other countries e.g. America and England compared to Australia?

It's more recgonisable and telling in developed countries.

*PLEASE CIRCLE THE ANSWERS WHERE REQUIRED:

1. What is your age? 17

2.Are you? MALE

3.Do you listen to music? YES

4.What form of music do you most frequently listen to?
MP3, M4A, FLAC

5.What sort of impact do you feel technology has had on music?

POSITIVE

Explain your reason: Although the advent of music piracy has been met by much concern within record companies, as well as the artists that create the music, technological advances have provided a cheap, effective way to acquire music. Music downloads are an excellent, free way to discover new bands or music and it comes without the financial burdens associated with purchasing CDs.

Legal music downloads however, are a burden on the industry. Not only does the restrictive DRM on all purchased music make it impossible to do what you want with the file, it is illegal to bypass it, for all of the moralists out there.

In addition, internet music purchases discourage the purchase of full albums, which has been replaced by individual songs. This is a concern for the artist, as albums are produced and created to be listened to as FULL ALBUMS, not individual songs.

6.Where do you purchase most of your music?

Gigs.

7. Do you perceive downloading music for free to be a problem?

NO

8. Do you agree or disagree with this statement “Illegal downloading of music cheats the artist and will eventually lead to the downfall of the Australian music?”

DISAGREE

9. Do you own an iPod or mp3 device?

YES

60GB 4th Gen Photo and a 2GB second generation Nano.

10. Do you believe that ipods/mp3 players are a negative socialising factor i.e. they contribute to anti-social/isolating behavior?

YES

11.Do you feel that the advancement in technology in the music industry does not accommodate for independent artists yet supports songs such as the crazy frog ring tone?

NO

12. Do you feel that the impact of technology on music is different in other countries e.g. America and England compared to Australia?

NO

Explain your answer
: In terms of developed countries, no. Similar products and music is freely available in all of the territories and as such they all pose the same threats and influences.

NEGATIVE - POSITIVE - NO IMPACT - NOT SURE

Explain your reason:___In some areas it has been positive, i.e. in the way that music can be accessed easier and people are able to have new ways to gain a career in music. SHOPS - INTERNET - FRIENDS - OTHER ____________

7. Do you perceive downloading music for free to be a problem?

NO - YES - NOT SURE

8. Do you agree or disagree with this statement “Illegal downloading of music cheats the artist and will eventually lead to the downfall of the Australian music?”

AGREE - DISAGREE - NOT SURE to some extent as it does cheat the artist but I don't believe it had anything to do with the downfall of Aussie music.

YES - NO

10. Do you believe that ipods/mp3 players are a negative socialising factor i.e. they contribute to anti-social/isolating behavior?

11.Do you feel that the advancement in technology in the music industry does not accommodate for independent artists yet supports songs such as the crazy frog ring tone?

YES - NO - NOT SURE - It is not the tech that supports artists - it is the people. Tech can also give greater opportunities for independent artists to get a career (through particular sites such as MySpace)

12. Do you feel that the impact of technology on music is different in other countries e.g. America and England compared to Australia?

YES - NO - NOT SURE

Explain your answer: _All peoples have the same problems and these countries are both 'western' nations such as ours and as far as I now, the issues would be the same except for the threatening of the USA's music industry
