Hi i was wondering how should we study for s&c

know all our concepts, methodoligies, our theories etc....is there any essay writing that we could do or wat?

Shamz, there's no right way of studying. One of an interesting way to approach the HSC exam was trying to predict the questions in the exam. I did that last year and everything I studied was tested in the HSC exam! What you do is take out your syllabus, and tick those dot points that they have asked in the previous papers. And study a lot for the ones they haven't ask yet. For the theories of Social Change, which they asked in HSC 2001 and 2003, I highly doubt that they will ask again in Part B of Section I (12 marks).

They ALWAYS ask methodologies. So learn ALL your methodologies and advantages and disadvanges of every methodologies. They sometimes ask you a specific ones in which you cannot choose. For essay writing, the best indicator for this year's questions would be the Independent Trial HSC paper 2004. Ask your teacher if after the exam if it is the indenpent paper.

The Society and Culture forum is a bit screwed at the moment. I can't seem to make a new thread for some resources.

So let me try here.

Year 12 Practice Exam Questions

1. Define ideology. (1 mark)

2. Compare the difference between case studies and ethnographic studies. (4 marks)

3. Using specific examples, define the term 'Social and cultural literacy' (2 marks)

4. Outline how social and cultural literacy is the result of the synthesis of personal experience and public knowledge. (4 marks)

5. Describe how you experience continuity and change in your macro world. (4 marks)

Year 11 - Practice Exam Questions

1. You are asked to conduct research on the impact of religion on family relationships.
Name ONE appropriate methodology you would use to research this issue. Justify your choice of methodology including its advantages and disadvantages. (20 marks)

2. Explain the difference between the concepts of Rites of Passage and Coming of Age. Give specific examples from the various cultures that you have studied. (20 marks)

3. Define socialisation. How does it help to form self identity? (20 marks)

trinx32, Society and Culture is one of the those subjects that only requires a little bit of effort to get high mark! I only study 2 hours one day before the exam and got 93. it is not really that hard. lol

If you don't get into your desired course at uni, maybe try to get into B Arts. Then after 1 year, you transfer to second year of the course you want. There are literally SO MANY ways you can get into uni and your course.

And lastly, I can take the exam for you. hehehe. I don't mind the 2 hour exam.

i guess, it is a "bullshitting" subject, i've done pretty well in S&C and the most study i ever do all year is the cramming just before the exam! *sigh* i'm going to have to do that for the trials, bring on the cramming!!!

By taking your school assessment tasks very seriously! And rank 1st in class to eliminate my Exam mark being affect from moderation of School assessment mark. And finally come 1st again in school with my HSC exam performance.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is success in Society and Culture comes from accumulation of knowledge obtained throughout learning the course. If you understand each aspects of the syllabus during class time, then you don't have to cram and study a lot at the end in order to gain a good mark.

ahhh, you're one of THOSE people who studied consistently throughout the year... well... i crammed, and did the exam today, wasn't THAT bad...

i get pretty good marks in school assessments, but my society teacher marks really easy, so everyone gets good marks.

My other subjects were biology, chemistry, engineering studies, maths, and english esl.

the only humanity subject i do is society...
isnt there a certain mark you need though to be scaled up? or are we all screwed? coz then if we get above 99 (only kidding") we will get a great uai

Gonna study a couple of hours. Learn terms, methodologies and theories of social change... then just briefly go over everything else.

Ok to clarify things, Society Don't get scale down THAT BAD.
I got 93 HSC marks and it only got scaled down to 88. Whereas my 92 in Biology got scaled down to 85 something. But as you all know by now, Society requires little of work compare do those Sciences.....As long as each Society students perform well in Society and all their subjects, the overall scaling will increase for Society and Culture.

These are some data obtained from SAM for 2003 HSC. You be the judge on whether Society scale "badly".

Society and Culture scaled marks and Biology Scaled marks with their respective HSC marks:

HSC mark 97 in Society/Biology - Scaled mark 95.6/97.4
HSC mark 95 - Scaled mark 92/92.8
HSC mark 93 - Scaled mark 88/88
HSC mark 92 - Scaled mark 86/85.6
HSC mark 91 - Scaled mark 84/83
HSC mark 90 - Scaled mark 81.8/80.6
HSC mark 88 - Scaled mark 77.8/76.6
HSC mark 86 - Scaled mark 73.6/73.6
HSC mark 84 - Scaled mark 69.2/70.8
HSC mark 80 - Scaled mark 61.4/64.8
HSC mark 75 - Scaled mark 52.8/57.4

There was really little or no difference between the two.

Technically, 98% of the subjects scale down, with the exception of Mathematics Extension 2, in which ALL HSC marks are scaled positively (even 40%). So I wouldn't worry about it.

the pressure is starting to get to me...
although one good thing to think about...most of the marks are easy to get ---> we just have to study very hard for the two extended responses...to ensure we get the other 40 marks

what topics is everyone doing?
im doing equality and difference, and crap ive forgotten the other one...oh yeah! belief systems.
