Andrew Martin, major researcher on high school academic performance, was asked this during a presentation. He said that Principals usually tell him they expect students to do (the equivalent of)
45 hour study week in Year 11, including about 22 hours of lessons.
50 hour study week in Year 12, including about 20 hours of lessons.
That matches what I have heard/read from the school.

That's probably assuming no work during summer holidays, but FWIW I heard that one reason private school kids have an advantage is because most of them at least do serious revision over holidays.

Still, principals probably have no idea of what real students actually do, so that may mean nothing.

Yeah.. thanks to dpospination for bumping up this 4 year old thread.

Imo, starting a new thread would've been better.

just as a nice hint guys, in these christmas holidays, revise what you did this term. Make sure you know everything really well because your next set of assessments will include first term work. It helps alot if you don't have to re-learn all the last term stuff and you can concentrate on the new material.

Also set a day where you do no work after school, like a friday. cus realisitcally no one does work on a friday afternoon so if you say that's your afternoon/night off, you feel less guilty and its let you get refreshed.

Yep mudcake42 is on the money! Seriously use you holidays for study!!

If you havent made notes and have been finding your feet this term, revise and knock some solid notes up!

If you have made notes already, maybe add to them (oh yeah, detail = marks), revise, or go ahead (maybe do a later topic that'll save you work later nearing exms!)

Oh yeah, study as much as you can after school and at night, but have breaks and some relaxation time, and take some time off on the weekend! Stay fresh, thats the key :)

hey there..well i guess it s not about how many hours u study per week..or day..
its a matter of how much u learn in the period of time or how much u revise in order to keep u ontop of everything..
theres no point studyin 4 hrs a day if its not helpin u significantly..
yeah there r some ppl out there that r soooo smart n they just need 3hrs a day n they kno they're stuff in n out..
but ppl like me ...not sayin im dumb ...wen i come from skool..eat n wateva...by the time i finish my skool h.w or other assessments or tutor work..its dinner time n then u just lose the motivation to study at night..so basically i dont really get to do 'extra work' which actually helps u rather than doin simple HW.
lol...the way im writin i can turn this into an essay..lol..
basically the only thing u shud focus on is whether u learn somethin outta wat u do ..how much of it u remember n whether its actually helping u understand the actual story behind everythin..
someone can come up to me n say ..oh i study 5 hrs everyday!!! but if i ask em the easiest thing n they look at me dumbfounded....wats the point..its wat u do n how much u do..not in wat period of time u do it in

i hear studying just before you go to sleep makes you go to sleep with those thoughts in your head and you will think about then in your sleep, effectively allowing you to remember more

but it depends when you prefer to study..

This is a 2004 thread :/

My study pattern during prelim was not consistent. On some days I did zilch, and during exam week I studied from 4pm to 3am. It entirely depended on how much work I aimed to have done and my other non school related engagements.

But I would suggest no more than 3 hours on your average day.

there's this person i know who's parents are one of those "study study study" types.

anyway, his parents never let him socialise or ANYTHING. literally nothing. he wouldn't even go to school carnivals (swimming, athletics etc.) because his parents thought they were a waste of valuable studying time.

i think that's sad.
