some of the later dot points state:

-describe differences between solid state and thermionic devices and discuss why solid state devices replaced thermionic devices

-identify data sources, gather, process, analyse information and use available evidence to assess the impact of the invention of transistors on society with particular reference to their use in microchips and microprocessors

non of these dot points actually ask HOW transistors and diodes work, but all the textbooks go into it, do we need to know HOW they work? or just the advantages/disadvantages of each

thermionic devices was crap cuz it was big, fragile, was like a cathode ray tube and got very hot after a long while of use.

solid state is small, lightweight, cheap requires less voltage, portable more efficient

can fit millions of these into an IC

well...u could bs on about how transistors are used in ics and microchips, which are in turn used in computer systems, which are in turn used in EVERYTHING...u can't go wrong :p
