some background info: i NEVER had a proper english teacher in my life, in primary school i was overseas in a non-english speaking country and did the very basic eng ever, in years 7-9 i had casuals ALL THE FUCKING TIME and was taught NOTHING
in yr 10 i moved selective stream at a partially selective school and for the first time ever i was given a teacher, and bc i dont have ANY SKILLS whatsoever i was getting MAXIMUM 16/20 and my average was a 70-something

im in eng adv (why? bc my teacher convinced me in an advanced kid even tho idk what im doing)

present: i need to compare elizabeth and darcy's values in chapter 34 mentioning free indirect speech, i dont fucking know what im doing
im actually gonna kill myself

question: analyse how free indirect speech is used to reveal Elizabeth and Darcy's values:
my response:
Jane Austen uses a range of techniques in Pride & Prejudice, in particular free direct speech. In chapter 34, Austen uses this technique to reveal Elizabeth and Darcy's values through the narration of their thoughts. Elizabeth's values are revealed through the mention of 'Elizabeth disdained the appearance of noticing... to conciliate her.' The combining of Elizabeth's prespective and emotions with thid-person narration tells the audience that she values moral conviction. Her refusal of Mr. Darcy's proposal due to his insensitivity towards her sister's marriage relfects that Elizabeth values respect and integirty. Unlik Elizabeth, Darcy values social class and personal pride through the mention of 'he was not more eloquent on the subject of tenderness than of pride.' The difference of values and prespectives is highlighted through the technique in order for better understanding personal identities of the characters.

hm. i definitely dont think its a bad response, although as u know there are things to improve. one is to be less informal with ur words/statements such as "unlike Elizabeth" and "tells the audience", using synonyms to make it sound more professional- also in order to answer the question asap (goal of the opening sentence) u could reformat the words of the q directly, like:

Jane Austen utilises a range of techniques within 'Pride & Prejudice', such as free indirect speech, in order to reveal Elizabeth and Darcy's values. This is first shown in...

ur answering of the question in comparing E and D's values is good, very straight to the point. u can mention free indirect speech multiple times throughout too, that'd help

not sure if this is what ur after. sorry im crashing out over english as well

i feel like i was also not taught the fundamentals of english. didn't know what a thesis was until a few months ago, didn't know how to structure essays and everything

No offence, I feel like this is a high C level. You definitely need to step your language up and your analysis isn’t great, you don’t literally say the composer used this technique just list and stop wasting ur word count on bs yap and bad language

i get this. i moved to australia in year 10 from an asian country, so you can imagine how differently english was taught. i think something that really helped me was honestly getting a tutor who could teach me how they wanted to see essays and creatives and reflections and stuff... cause english is very much an innate thing tbh, like i feel like it is very hard to improve in it without truly understanding it. hope this helps!

I feel like instead of using words like ‘tells the audience’ maybe instead use depicts, demonstrates, etc. also analysing the effect of indirect speech on the audience in ur analysis. Also I feel like through the whole thing u kinda need to be a bit more specific especially in the topic sentence. Like a brief overview pf what sort of thoughts and values. And also yeah mention indirect speech and link it back to the question more

Honestly that response isnt even bad to say the least you just need to flip around the wording and make it flow better but so far thats a pretty good response for eng adv. Also never fear to ask chat for help i think it saved my band 6 for eng adv

I feel like your understanding isn't a problem at all. You clearly get it.

This would actually be a very tricky short answer question in the HSC, because it specifies a technique for you to analyse. Usually, you would be required to analyse an idea and provide evidence (which can be anything - stylistic techniques, figurative language, structure/form, not just free indirect discourse), which would be a lot easier.

I agree with asking ChatGPT for some help, but otherwise, don't worry too much! Just practice thinking fast on the spot and getting all your ideas down.

And how do English papers work, anyway? If everyone studies their own text, is the idea that the themes are linked? like what if ur text is not good for the question??? or does that not happen
I think the texts all have similar ideas and the question should be broad enough to fit all texts
