I read on the website about safe escorts for people returning to cars and going to the bus stop at night. Is this just to make people feel safe or is there some sort of crime problem going on?

There have been isolated incidents, but you're going to get them anywhere. There was a minor problem with people on bikes approaching people and stealing things then taking off, but this appears to have been resolved as I haven't heard about it in quite some time. There have also been isolated incidents involving a person who was approaching people then revealing himself to them, and while I find that somewhat comical I'm sure it'd be rather traumatic if it happened to me. Apart from that, I haven't really heard reports of anything else.

I think mostly though it's a precaution, it's a big campus and when you finish up after dark it can sometimes be intimidating when you have to walk to the other side on your own. The security phones are all over the place, so if you're at all worried you can call for an escort. It's a nice idea and seems to be utilised by lots of people, so if you're at all concerned you shouldn't hesitate to use it. Better safe than sorry, as they say :)

They should place more lighting around campus. It really isn't a big campus if you compare it to any of the Sydney ones. Wollongong is a BAD area when it comes to crime. Goood for serenity though. :p

Haha well, I guess my idea of big may be a bit off, being from somewhere much smaller :) Walking from building 3 up to the buses seems like a bit of a trek to me, but then again like you said that would be made a lot better by some extra lighting :)

BAD area with capitals and everything? :( It always seemed pretty good to me, but then again that might just be as a result of differing perspective :)

Most of the crime is targeted at internation students. There's not too much crime, just isolated incidents, and when incidents do occur it usually involves some japanese girl having her bike stolen by a group of 15 year olds who think stealing pink trashed bikes is entertainment.

So does this mean I should wait for a bus rather than walk to the train station at night?

I used to always walk to the station in the dark after my last class on Thursdays. I did so because the lecture went overtime so I missed the bus, and if I argued with the lecturer she'd fail me in that subject, and any other that I'd have her. There WILL be subjects that I have her again (though I'm working on minimising that).

I'll make a point to mug you if I see you walking to the train station just to prove your point:)
That being said, everytime someone tried to mug me on the trains, it's always been south of Wollongong. Normally around Unanderra.

I did a quick and rough comparison between Sydney Uni and Wollongong, Syd is about 0-20% bigger. I think UNSW is bigger than both, but I'm not sure. Just FYI.

UNSW could only be biggest because of its vast useless spaces.
