i doubt it because the UAI's are not calculated on basis of scool rankings at least i hope not

To be short and sweet, unfortunately your UAI will pulled down depending on how everyone else went in your year.
e.g if alot of the students got very low marks in a school, and a student that performed decently, say got 70s, 80s in his/her subjects, his/her UAI will be affected quite significantly.

My school was 540th last year. 704 exams sat, and only 5 band 6's. This year we only got 4.

Oh wow, they're so inspiring and motivating!

No it wouldn't matter much, especially if you're at the top. It all depends on YOU to determine what UAI you get. If you're doing badly (at or below average), then your UAI may be lowered due to YOUR PERFORMANCE RELATIVE TO THE STATE, not the school's performance.

well if you get 100 in all your internals and 100 in all your externals, theres no way they can cut you down.

if you cant do that, just hope like fuck that your grade does good.

This will only happen to people ranked below 1. The person who is ranked first will retain their own marks and not be affected by the rest of their class. This is the only thing stopping me from despairing that I'll get a crappy UAI because half my class is subpar. :p

You need to do well in your actual HSC exams, because if you are ranked first in your school, then your exam mark will be your school assessment mark (assuming you also do the best in your school in the exam). If you do this, there will be no disadvantage.
That is the plan, anyway. At least the upper half of my class is quite strong, so I shouldn't be affected as much. :)

As far as I know, the banter of pulling UAI's down because of the school you're at is bullcrap.

Your UAI is dependant on HSC marks, and if all your cohort @ your school perform EXACTLY as well as they did during school IN the HSC exams, then your HSC marks will not be affected adversely.

The only possibility of you being screwed up, is if a significant proportion of the people who are stupider than you @ the school or a small proportion of those smarter than you, screw up. Then your marks will be brought down.

As long as your school is collectively shit for the whole of the year & HSC, then you'll get what you deserve, irrespective of your peers.

You can't do much about it, other than work hard and score high yourself.

If you get beaten by crap students regularly then I guess you deserve crap marks as a result.

Exactly. Don't spend time worring about school scaling cos if you study and work hard then you'll get the marks and uai you deserve regardless of what school you go to.

Oh thanks riviet, I only went to a rural co-ed catholic high school (not selective or private) and our school's ranking was 186th so anything's possible if you just put the work in.
