its also interesting to note that around 3000 people out of the total amount of people able to receive the School Certificate this year did not even sit the paper at all.

e.g. out of a total of 85554 School Certificate candidates:

82128 sat geography and history
82147 sat english
82247 sat maths
82106 sat science

anyone have an explanation for this?

A number of yr 10 students didnt sit the SC at my school because they already had jobs and left schools at the minimum leaving age of 15 and 6 months. Thats probably why 3000 people didnt sit the SC and also a few hundered people would be sick etc.

Every year some students miss external exams for a number of reasons with illness being the most frequent.

Others are on exchange overseas and therefore don't sit the exam.

Others simply don't turn up.

I have had students miss the exams due to funerals, weddings (interstate or os or even in rural NSW), birthdays of family members, fires at home (one lost their home a few years ago), floods, bushfires - not this year but in the past - and car accidents, bike accidents and other injuries, sports carnivals elsewhere, job interviews, working, medical appointments for other family members and they are the number one carer.
